Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There's nothing like a solid central New York winter complete with lake-effect snow and chilling winds. Pack your parkas. Don’t be surprised when the snow piles up past your waist. But when you feel as though you’ve hit rock bottom, drink some hot cocoa and remember that Hamilton is in central New York. We have real winters. Students deal with it, most come to appreciate it, and the other seasons more than make up for the cold. Seasonal Affective Disorder invades the campus community come winter, and it is the true cause of “Hamilton Cool,” the term used to describe a person that just walks by on Martin’s Way without saying hello. It’s a sort of apathy, likely to be caused by the gray, depressing sky. Who feels like being friendly when their face is frostbitten, and they need to fight the wind in order to stay standing?

On the other hand, there is the other extreme. The second the snow melts, the main quad is blanketed with towels and buzzing with activity. When the weather changes, people you haven’t seen for the entire winter emerge from hibernation. Books are traded in for barbeques, facts for Frisbees, and professors for paradise. Even though students only see about two weeks of nicer weather, Hamilton knows how to embrace the good and forget about the bad. It's practically worth going through the horrific upstate New York winter in order to experience the joy that comes with 60 degrees and sun.

Extremely Cold

Winter months are extremely long and may be a bit depressing. The weather reaches the negatives, so snow boots and puffer jackets are a must.

It's really not a big deal. Yes, is snows and yes, it gets cold but there's lot's of things to do int he winter and all the buildings are heated well allowing one to keep the winter at bay.

4 Seasons: You Love It or Hate It

Being in the Northeast, Hamilton gets all four seasons a year, and I'm used to it. Fall is absolutely gorgeous when all the trees change color. The Glen is the best place to walk in the Autumn air. Winter in the Northeast is obviously cold and snowy, but students make the most of it. Great ski places, snow days, huge snow forts, and epic snowball fights are just some of the ways Hamilton students enjoy Winter. When Spring finally rolls around, we all appreciate it that much more, and everyone is outside enjoying the warmth and sun.
