Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Even the most enthusiastic and grateful student can find dining options repetitive and uninspired. The main eatery, the Dining Commons—called Saga, but served by Sodexho-Marriott—prepares three hot meals a day during the week and a brunch and dinner on the weekends. Complaints about Saga are commonplace, but the place is not as bad as some students would suggest. Portions are self-serve, so students are not stuck if they bravely, but mistakenly, get a helping of the mystery fish and discover it swims more than sits in their stomachs. Saga also provides a selection specifically for vegetarian and vegan students, down to items like vegan cake and veganaise. Also, due to the efforts of the campus’s local food initiative, Saga now offers local milk and purchases shares in the College Farm’s community-supported agriculture (CSA) program.

The atmosphere in the Dining Commons is not always ideal. Many liken the College to summer camp—hence, the name “Camp Hamp”—and the Dining Commons epitomizes the cliquishness that bothers some students. Alternatively, eating in Saga can be a familiar, comfortable habit—a way to stay connected. Overall, the on-campus dining experience ranges from deplorable to amazing, depending on the critic, but its ratings ought to hover around the “decent” mark.

Good, but It Gets Old.

Food is good, but you need to be creative not to get tired of it. There's a salad bar, a deli bar, a stir fry bar, a cooking bar, an ice cream bar. So, if you are willing to do something with those it stays interesting, if you just go for the hot meals, it gets kinda old.

Get Creative

Hampshire has one dining hall, SAGA. The best thing that can be said about it is it fully caters to all dietary needs. There are always a myriad of vegan and gluten free options. In fact, meat eaters are the most likely candidates to be unhappy with the food. There are do-it-yourself salad, sandwich, and stir-fry bars. Get creative or you'll get bored! The majority of upperclassmen Hampshire students live in housing with private kitchens, so the dining hall is dominated by freshmen. Students have their choice of three rooms to eat in: Small and quiet, large with round tables, or medium with long rectangular tables. SAGA is not open all day, but for two and three hour increments at meal times.

There is also a small cafe, perfect for snacks and lunch. The Bridge Cafe is attached to both the library and the recreation center. At the beginning of each semester every student is given $90 to be spent only at the Bridge.

Tolerable, but Better to Opt Out

The meal plan is less than optimal, but buying from the Bridge Cafe on campus is convenient. Living in the mods without a plan is great!

Special Options The College Farm provides a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program. Groups of students can purchase shares in this program and get a weekly supply of fresh goodies, depending on what’s in season. Another option for food is the Mixed-Nuts Co-op, a student-run, cooperatively-managed food market that offers produce, baked goods, dairy, dry goods, natural foods, snacks, and beverages.

  • Each student is required to purchase a Café Card for $75 per semester, which puts a declining balance on their Hampshire ID card that they can swipe at the Tavern or the Bridge Café or the Dining Commons if the student does not live in the dorms.
