Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Computing at Hampshire leaves something to be desired, with a sometimes-fickle network connection and limited late-night lab access. (Most labs close at midnight, with extended hours at the end of the semester.) Students and faculty alike have gripes about the electronic administrative system, the Hub, whether it’s for course-registration hassles, missing documents, or for simply not working. The technical folks get a lot of grief, but things are moving in the right direction—just perhaps not at a rate that everyone likes.

The public computer labs are never so crowded that you won't find a free computer, but toward the end of the semester, they can morph into humid pits of tangible stress and sleep-deprived anxiety. The widest slice of the student population uses the PCs in the library, whereas the cognitive science folks use the Adele Simmons Hall computer labs, and many natural science students use the Cole Science Center. The most common place to find people doing their late-night studying/computing is the Airport Lounge, which is open 24 hours a day and offers free coffee through the night. Overall, most students agree that if bringing a computer is a financial possibility, bring it. But if bringing a computer is absolutely not an option, you won’t be utterly without hope.

Good Computer Facilities.

The computer lab at Hampshire is good, though I don't know too much about computers and things. The computer science teachers are among the best liked at the school.

Bloody Macs

If I could understand Macs, I probably wouldn't exhibit this anamosity against them (I seriously smacked one in the third-floor lab). If you're a Mac person, you'll be at home here. There's almost always a computer available in the library...however, if you want to print in the libaray, that's quite another story. I hope that we resolve those issues soon.

The computing Help Desk can assist students with problems they might encounter. The Information Technology Department information is available online at computing.hampshire.edu.

The Adele Simmons Hall (ASH) first-floor labs are equipped for cognitive science students. In the basement of the library is the Advanced Media Facilities, home to the campus cable channel. The equipment and facilities include five Final Cut Pro 3 editing stations with three DVD burners, a media classroom, two iMove DV editing stations, two flatbed scanner stations, two CD burner stations, and an audio production station.

If you can’t bring a computer, a good investment is a flash drive (like a portable hard drive) that connects to either a
Mac or a PC through the USB port, although Hampshire gives all new students a 1GB flash drive.

There is a growing movement of Linux—a free, open-source operating system—users on campus. Linux was created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds as an alternative to the proprietary UNIX. Free software means that anyone is free to edit or change the code to make it better, which makes Linux a very versatile operating system. You can make it look and behave in any manner you choose. Many Vista users on campus are switching to Linux because of their frustrations with that operating system. Hampshire's student-run computer diagnostic center is happy to help with any operating system, even Linux. Since there are so many Linux users on campus, it is hard to find a problem that no one is able to fix.
