Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Substance use is definitely prevalent around campus, with alcohol and marijuana being the substances of choice. It’s also acceptable for students to remain dry, though it can make socializing a bit awkward. Some circles of friends seem to primarily bond around a shared joint. However, the school has been taking steps to discourage smoking. There is a rule against smoking in rooms or within 20 feet of residential buildings, including balconies, but as with other regulations on record, this rule is tough to enforce, and the housing office currently has not stamped out students’ smoking habits.

The generally accepted informal rule is to simply be considerate of your neighbors and fellow residents, and students commonly look the other way, rather than report others’ substance use, as long as it does not seem to endanger anyone. On the flip side, those who use drugs will not necessarily ostracize those that do not. Students who regularly use substances and those who rarely do concur in their disapproval of both aggressive drug use or pushing and drug busts of individuals who do not necessarily harm others, such as private marijuana use. The key is respect, and sometimes, compromise.

Open but Not Overused

I don't think kids here smoke weed more than students on most other colleges, but they have the freedom to be more open about it in general. It is easy to access drugs if you want them, but only a minority of students use drugs very frequently. I've never seen anyone use hard drugs, although hallucinogens tend to make an appearance, especially on Hampshire Halloween. People do tend to drink, smoke, and party on weekends, which is perfectly normal.

Be Prepared for Constant Drug Use

Okay, okay, I know that Hampshire is the quintessential "hippie" school. So going into this, I knew there would be excessive amounts of marijuana, which there are. However, I was not prepared for the constant use of hard drugs. You will find students blatantly tripping acid and mushrooms at all hours of the day, regardless of the day of the week. Smoking opium, the drug HEROIN is made out of is also popular. Recently, some of my friends got into smoking opium [heroin] mixed with morphine. This isn't a school. It's a crack house. Really, if you don't like drugs, or even are comfortable with marijuana and recreational drug use, which I am and participate in on the weekends, think about the kind of environment you want to immerse yourself in. We are in the middle of the woods, so sitting around doing drugs is the activity of choice. It may sound nice for a while. It was. Now it is a waste of time and money. I'm leaving. kthanksbye.

Drug Scene

As with every college, drugs are used and available at Hampshire. The most important difference at Hampshire is that there is no sense of peer pressure around using drugs. Because Hampshire is such a difficult school academically, many people do not engage in drug or alcohol usage at all, and this is completely tolerated and respected by the members of campus that do engage in drug usage.
