College Prowler Take
Frankly, Hampshire College would not win any architecture pageants unless it was for “form follows function.” The buildings are ugly by common consensus, but they perform their duties admirably. Academics, artists, and athletes alike have a few gripes about the facilities: the library is small and dingy, the theater spaces are limited, and the main basketball gym is scruffy. A big concern is that the College lacks a student center, and for students looking to avoid paying inflated prices for daily goods like groceries and toiletries, the school store is not going to cut it. The key culprit in many facilities-related issues is the College’s meager endowment. Luckily, Hampshire students have access to the other four colleges’ facilities. The appeal of the worn buildings and facilities is in their quirkiness. Donut 1, the furthest of the circular apartment complexes, houses the informal, student-run Goodread Library. This library’s holdings vary slightly from year to year, depending on the flow of students donating their used books. The Airport Lounge, a public space designated for late-night studying, almost always has students around the clock. Student workers work through the night and prepare free coffee as bleary-eyed students type away on papers. The Tavern, though it has a spotty past, has been the site of small concerts, poetry events, parties, and late-night chilling. The main art gallery becomes particularly active in the last few weeks of the semester as student exhibits go up. Shows and public events are also held in the Red Barn.

The facilities at Hampshire are...
The facilities at Hampshire are quite good. Saga, the official dining hall, does not have the best-tasting food you'll ever have, but the Bridge Café certainly holds its own. There are multiple athletic options to choose from, including basketball and tennis courts, gyms, a rock-climbing wall, and plenty of open fields to play soccer or Frisbee on. The Bridge Café also has seating for people to study or hang out, although if you prefer quiet when working, the Airport Lounge is the place for you. Franklin Patterson Hall is also a good meeting place for clubs or groups of friends.

The facilities are pretty nice, but it would be cool if they had more custodial staff to maintain it, or even better, a well-paid custodial staff. Plus, students seriously need to take better care of their stuff. |

The library has the least books of the Five College Consortium, so it is a good thing that students can use the other colleges' resources. The library center houses the Airport Lounge (a 24-hour study space), the post office, the HampStore (the bookstore), and Public Safety. |

Favorite Things To Do
For an athletic day, students can work out at the Multi-Sport Center, shoot hoops in the RCC, go for a swim in the RCC pool, bike the local trails, cross-country ski, go for a climb on the RCC climbing walls, work out on the Hampshire farm, or play tennis at one of the courts scattered across the campus. For a chill day, students can go for a stroll through the woodsy parts of campus (or visit the Hampshire tree), play pool in the Upper RCC, attend a jam session in the Yurt, relax in the coed sauna, curl up for movies or conversation in common spaces, or take a break on the sporadic swings across campus. For an artsy or intellectual day, students can browse the Main Art Gallery (below the library), attend one of the frequent open-mic nights, or go to film screenings or talks held frequently in the lecture halls. For almost any facility or event Hampshire lacks, the other campuses nearby usually fill the gap.
The woods at Hampshire are one of the most exciting aspects of this campus. Most of the land at Hampshire is undeveloped, leaving lots of space to explore. If indoor adventures are more appealing, the RCC has a sauna, swimming pool, basketball court, climbing wall, billiards tables and more all available just by presenting a student ID. In the not-so-active arena, there are always lectures, screenings, and other activities going on. Just check out calendar.hampshire.edu to find out what is happening on campus.
