Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There’s a consensus of gratefulness for the absence of Greek life at Hampshire. For those interested in trying a frat party or two, UMass is just down the road and has plenty of options. But if Greek life is a top priority, Hampshire is probably not for you. Each of the housing areas has a stereotype, however, and new students will likely quickly pick up on these. The scene varies just as the mod areas do: Enfield is the suburb, Greenwich is in the woods, and Prescott is the city—corresponding activities ensue.

There are plenty of student organizations, and in some, members develop an intimacy and camaraderie over common passions, the same type of close relationships the Greeks allege they foster. There is also no dearth of parties—the mods practically hop on weekends with blasting music and dancing. For those unable to find a niche, creating one is easy enough. At the beginning of each semester, there is an open call for new groups, and any student with initiative and a handful of interested students (or supportive friends) can submit a proposal and budget for a new group. Some recent additions have included groups focused on issues from fat activism to bird watching to cricket.

Greek Life

Hampshire College does not have greek life. Instead they have upper class students living in "mods" which are apartment style housing communities. Each one has its own name; Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott. Each apartment community has its own distinct architectural style of either rural, urban, or suburban. Each of these housing communities has their own themed parties and events, so you get the benefits of the greek life party, without the exclusivity. At Hampshire, everyone is invited to all the parties

We have no Greek life, which has its pros and cons. There isn't the exclusivity of fraternities and sororities. On the other hand, I find that Greek life can be a way that people form communities and connections. But, opposed to Greek life, Hampshire has themed and identity-based housing. These include, but are not limited to, Kosher, queer, "gaming," substance-free, quiet, one-gender, people of color, vegan, and communal living spaces. You can also apply for a themed living space, so, you can create your own community within the flexibility of the campus. Also, Hampshire consists of a lot of on-campus apartments and mostly single rooms. So, some advantages of Greek life have already been addressed in the very fundamentals of living on campus.

Thank God there are no frats. If you want to do the frat thing, head to UMass. That’s all I’ve got to say on that.
