Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In a word, Hampshire relationships are incestuous. Hampshire is small, and while that can mean comfort, when relationships sour, it can make folks downright claustrophobic. That being said, gender fault lines are not a problem, nor are there any enforced visiting hours, restrictions, or penalties for consensual sexual activity. For the most part, students find a social atmosphere that enables and even encourages experimentation, allowing some students to explore formerly less feasible or available relationships. As a result, casual hookups far outnumber more traditional pairings.

Hampshire students’ tendencies are something of a mix of academics, activism, chilling out, and partying. Students are generally aware of economic, political, and social issues, and many wear their politics on their sleeves. The campus has its share of intense partiers and potheads, as well as library hermits and workaholics. The dominant form of socialization, however, is the intimate gatherings of students doing things from sampling indie music or films to talking protest strategy to heatedly debating issues of the moment. Hampshire folks don’t just leave their politics and passion in the classroom, and as a result, students at the other schools are unlikely to ever call a conversation or interaction with a Hampshire student forgettable or boring.

Tree Huggers, Hipsters and Freaks

If you are looking for strange folk like you, you've come the right place. Everyone at Hampshire was the odd one in their high school. When they arrive at Hampshire they either venture into the land of radical or mellow out a bit. All in all, it's an interesting scene. You will never be bored!

Everyone Is Different...

I find everyone to be very passionate about what they are involved in or just at Hampshire for the party scene. The guys are very scruffy (not in a bad way) and down-to-earth for the most part. They can also be very into their looks if they fit into the hipster category (i.e. hilarious shoes and glasses, tight pants). The girls have similar styles, just in a feminine way. Social life is mostly centered on-campus.

A+ for Straight Women/Lesbians/Gay Men, F for Straight Men :\

The ladies of Hampshire College are underrated. From hipsters to hippies to punks, they tend to have a great sense of style and natural beauty. However, with such a wide selection of lovely and available women, the small percentage of straight men on campus are tools. Why? Because they CAN be. Of course there are exceptions to this rule. Sadly, these exceptions tend to be taken. Hampshire women often hookup with guys who are way beneath them, which gives a lot of losers an inflated sense of hotness. It is truly tragic. However, queers tend to do well in the romance department, because there are a lot of hot lesbians and gays. That said, most people--regardless of sexual orientation--just want to hit it and quit it.

Facts

Social Scene

Visually, Hampshire's a distorted flip on mainstream high schools, but just because high school's oddballs have come together, it doesn't mean there is no isolation. Some people just don't "fit in," even by Hampshire's variation on standards.

Hookups or Relationships?

Hampshire is a small place, and word spreads quickly about hookups, but there are a few who develop strong relationships.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Hampshire is a small campus, and you can meet people practically anywhere, depending on your interests. People hang out in the Airport Lounge, the Bridge Café, and the Tavern, and students will often make connections in classrooms, at organization meetings, events (gatherings, lectures, performances), parties, and off campus. Local coffeeshops are also a good bet for meeting new, friendly people. The advice for meeting people is simple: don’t stay holed up in your room, keep an eye out for fliers for interesting events, and get involved.

Dress Code

Fashion is relatively in line with the liberal arts image, though the trademark stereotypes, based on a bit of truth, are the hippies and the hipsters. The hippies have their dreads, political T-shirts, and natural smell, whereas the hipsters have their bed-heads, trucker hats, and Salvation Army-chic gear. People wear what they please, and more often than not, their clothes reflect their politics or crowd. It’s not tough to pick out an activist, an outdoorsy kid, a hippy, or a hipster on a stroll across campus. Everything looks a bit more bundled up in the winter, but come autumn or spring, Hampshire is a kid’s painting of colors.
