College Prowler Take
For the most part, Hampshire is a safe campus, and many students leave their dorm rooms unlocked. Campus Public Safety officers are visible but far from menacing. Recently, Mount Holyoke, a neighboring college, took over Hampshire's Pub Safety, and have made many improvements to its functioning. That said, the nights can still be dark, but aside from the occasional fear associated with the lighting problem, most people do not feel afraid on campus. IDs are required to get into the two dormitories, and similar systems will be installed in the other houses. This is not to say that it is not easy to “piggyback” on someone who has an ID or a key. The lax atmosphere surrounding building access has led to problems, from uncomfortable, but harmless encounters with wandering and confused students to serious invasions and assaults. Most theft is not due to forcible entry, though, as much as it’s due to the generally trusting campus. Many students leave their books, papers, laptops, and other items in study carrels in the library. The campus, and the area in general, is full of fairly trustworthy people and requires awareness more than hawk-eyed suspicion. In the case of an emergency on campus, there is a 24-hour student-run EMT organization and Counselor Advocate organization, in addition to the Public Safety staff. On weekends and after 5 p.m. on weekdays, students with medical emergencies must seek off-campus facilities, and even in lesser medical cases you might need to go to UMass to receive extensive care. Hampshire’s Health Services does provide sexual health services, including contraceptives.

Hampshire is just about the safest...
Hampshire is just about the safest place I can imagine. We hear about crime on campus about once a semester. I walk around here at night, and I've never felt unsafe. My neighbors steal bowls from my kitchen every so often, but that's about as bad as it gets.

Personally, I think Hampshire’s campus is really safe. If you are careful with your belongings (i.e., lock your door), you’ll be fine. I take walks late at night, and it’s safe. |

Hampshire College is quite safe if you ask me. I feel 10 times safer than I do in my own neighborhood, at least. |

Hampshire has a few Public Safety officers, but it is generally a really safe campus, so we don’t need more than a few. |
