| Advice on Finding a Job/Internship | |
The self-motivation that characterizes much of Hampshire life applies to finding jobs and internships. Finding a work-study job can be tough if you wait too long into the semester, and in general, it is the students who take the initiative to inquire about jobs who land them. The Career Options Resource Center (CORC) is utilized to a modest extent. In recent years there has been an emphasis on improving this resource, and CORC now operates mailing lists for internships, scholarships, fellowships, and jobs. Some of these offerings are limited to Hampshire applicants due to contacts with Hampshire alums. The reality of finding a job or an internship depends on networking and getting suggestions from friends and faculty in addition to the CORC staff. Students will give each other the heads up on campus jobs, and professors (particularly advisors and committee members) can help refer students to job openings or internships that they know fit students’ interests. For jobs, working off campus can be difficult to coordinate without a car, but there are local jobs accessible by the bus, including working at the Jones Library in downtown Amherst. Find yourself in a class you love with a professor who inspires you? Talk to your professor about what you want to do, and you might get a great lead for an internship or job. The Valley is particularly vibrant with activity, and there are plenty of opportunities to intern or work for an interesting organization. Don’t limit yourself to what’s available on the Hampshire campus in terms of resources; go to events at the other colleges and do your own Internet searches.
