Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The bar and club scene is not front and center, but it exists for the students who seek it out. Students often mix with local residents in the main bars and pubs, but for the most part, the bar scene is dominated by UMass folks. The latest any nearby bar stays open is 2 a.m., and there is not much open  past that except a McDonald’s drive-thru, a Dunkin’ Donuts, and sometimes the local diner. The clubs draw a decent crowd, though Hampshire students looking for a club scene often try their luck in Springfield or other places a bit out of the immediate area.

Hampshire is not a morgue at night, however, and on-campus parties and late-night events like music performances draw the largest Hampshire crowds. Students can often wander around Prescott, Enfield, or Greenwich area to find a party they can check out. Modmates and friends often advertise their parties by putting up fliers, posting messages to public Internet forums like the Hampshire Daily Jolt Forum, or spreading the word through other Internet networks.

Unenjoyable

Amherst is an okay town but without an id you can't get into the bars. On campus the parties suck and are usually at the older kid's mods but not very fun.

I'm not a huge party person, but...

I'm not a huge party person, but the parties I have been to on campus are always fun with a lot of dancing. Most parties have themes and are open to everyone. As for off-campus spots, the only place I have ever been is Diva's, a local club that has a college night. It is really great because you meet a lot of kids from the five other colleges.

Organization Parties

The SOURCE groups and related groups often throw parties in the Cultural Center or Tavern. These include theme parties from hip-hop parties thrown by the James Baldwin Scholars to international dance parties thrown by the International Students' Group. These parties are typically all-campus parties, meaning anyone can attend. Mods have some superficial similarities to fraternities and sororities, particularly in that they throw house parties. These parties often have informal themes advertised.

Monkey Bar & Grill

Monkey Bar’s restaurant serves Mediterranean food, and there is also a separate bar where you can find a lot of students on the weekends. Just beware of the sketchy characters that often show up here.

The “Deuce” is a favorite among Five College kids due to its cheap drinks and its karaoke and dancing.

Packard’s

Packard’s offers all the trappings of a traditional pub restaurant, with wings and build-your-own burgers. It’s a popular hangout for Smith College students.

14 Masonic St.

Moan & Dove

The drinks here are good, but they’re a little pricey. Although it doesn’t cater specifically to college students, it has a friendly atmosphere.

Fedora’s Tavern

Fedora’s generally closes a little after midnight, so it’s not really a spot to hang out all night, but it may be a good place to meet some Mt. Holyoke girls.

Amherst Brewing Company

The Amherst Brewing Company is a great place to find some good microbrews and get some pretty decent pub-style meals. There is a 21-and-over-only bar upstairs with pool tables, and they have live entertainment on the weekends.

Not quite as upscale as some other area places, but the laid-back atmosphere and live music makes it a popular spot for kids from the Five Colleges.

The Hangar

The Hangar offers wings that vary in spiciness from Wimpy to Afterburner. Their special on pints of Guinness adds to the atmosphere of the Hangar as a college pub.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

If you want to drink alcohol, there are plenty of places you can do so without getting carded (including mod parties). But for those looking for a dry evening, there are always performances at the colleges and local theaters, and there are other events where drinking is not the focus.
