The Valley is full of interesting places to see and things to do., and the dining options follow suit. Not only are all of the major genres represented, but there are many sub-genres as well. There is general Thai food, but there is also Fresh Side, a Thai food restaurant specializing in tea and tea-rolls. There is upscale and downscale in most of these genres, so finding food on a student budget is no problem at all. Further, all sorts of “alternative” options are available, so it is easy to find vegetarian, vegan, and even raw. Amherst's legendary popovers can be found at Judie's, which is a must when your parents come to visit. While it is hard to compare this area to a big city with regard to variety, the Pioneer Valley holds its own when it comes to interesting food choices. One of the biggest problems is the delivery places that refuse to come out to Hampshire because it is out in the boonies. Delivery Express helps here, but they charge a lot for delivery and even they do not cover a very large area. One of the very exciting things about Amherst and, to a lesser extent, Northampton is the degree of independent, non-chain restaurants to be found. There is always something to be tried. The small area is actually a good thing for two reasons when it comes to choosing restaurants: One, it is easy to get reviews of places you have not been, and two, the limited choices mean that indecision due to sheer size is lessened. It is easy to fall in love with the dining around here.

There is nothing within walking distance at all from Hampshire College. There are some good restaurants within biking distance, and there's a free, good bus system. There are also good delivery services and a good variety of food offered.

Amherst is a great area for...
Amherst is a great area for organic, local food. There are several farms around where you can buy local, seasonal foods. However, there are also chain grocery stores such as Stop & Shop and Trader Joe's. As for restaurants, there is a great variety of foods to choose from. There's Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Thai, Indian, Moroccan, Route 9 Diner, and so much more. Not everything is available for delivery or take out, but most places are just a free bus ride away.

Because of the size of UMass, the town provides many resources. I can't name all of the restaurants that are open past midnight (and deliver!) on school nights. There are several 24-hour diners and fast food places. Along with the late-hour options, the types of food within the surrounding area are overwhelming. You can get Ethiopian, Mediterranean, Asian fusion, American, local bakery foods, steak and seafood specialties, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Vietnamese, and many more within a 10- to 15-minute drive. This college town has exposed me to more types of food than I've ever imagined. |

Most places are pretty good, but they can be expensive. Some good places are the Teapot, Antonio’s, and the Hangar. |
