Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

A majority of students opt to live on campus all four years, due to the advantages of College housing, but there are a few who seek off-campus housing, particularly in their final year of study. Although in recent years the housing crunch has made the housing office more generous with allowing students to live off campus, getting the green light is not easy. Certain students automatically qualify to live off campus, including students 25 or older, anyone living with their parents within 30 miles of Hampshire, married students, or those who have children. Disability coordinators may grant students with a housing exemption to live off campus if these students can document their disability—learning, psychological, or physical—and certify that off-campus housing is a necessary accommodation.

Off-campus housing can be expensive and inconvenient if not located near a bus stop. Most students, despite their complaints about housing at Hampshire, choose to stay on campus, and sometimes that decision is based on avoiding the hassle of applying for housing exemption, in addition to the process of securing a place to live. Off-campus housing can provide students with time away from Hampshire, but it’s a fine line between distance and isolation, the latter being more likely during the coldest months when company seems sparse, even on campus.

Great Off-Campus Housing (Depends on Location)

Amherst is a very easy place to find pretty inexpensive housing. There is not much housing available close to campus, however, there is some great housing within 10-15 minutes of the campus. If you are looking for a quiet, woodsy environment, then the neighboring towns of Shutesbury, Leverett and Pelham having gorgeous and inexpensive houses/apartments. If you want more convenient housing, the center of Noho and Amherst have pretty nice, standard apartments. Everywhere is very safe, but there have been a lot of break-ins lately. Remember to lock your doors!

Off-campus housing is the most...

Off-campus housing is the most difficult thing to try to get. Even though it will save you money, the amount of energy, effort, and trouble it is to try to get approval to live off-campus is not worth it.
