Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Reflex blue and white are HU’s colors, but don’t expect to come and see the students on campus draped in them. In general, students tend not to show off their school spirit and paraphernalia. There is some support for the football team, but overall, the Pirates tend not to come out to support their teams. The most support comes during Homecoming, but even then, it tends to be more of a fashion show for meeting and greeting than about the game. It’s usually in the athletes themselves that people will find the most school spirit.

The Hampton Pirates have a decent athletics department, which offers six varsity sports for men and eight for women. Currently, the HU sports teams are NCAA Division I (I-AA for football) and participate in the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC). Athletes are also expected to be good students; in 1977, the University set up a program called, “Student Athletes Involved in Learning, Leadership and Service” (SAILLS). This program is supposed to aid student-athletes in their studies and help make them well-rounded members of the student body. Despite efforts, many students feel that it can seem like athletes get privileges over the average student when it comes to school and eating in the cafeteria. They seem to get better food and then fight to make sure they pass their classes so they can play. There is an intramurals program available to students, along with club sports, but few people seem to know anything about either of them.

The Home by the Sea

Hampton University has a very proud and exhilarating group of students who love to attend the athletic sporting events. The pirates seem to always get the crowd going and leave them some sort of memory to take home. It is a great honor and experience the intensity that the pirates withhold in order to get the win.

Athletics Are Pretty Important

There are a lot of students at Hampton who are there not only for their academic standing but because of their athletic involvement. There are majority students with athletic scholarships at this school. Whenever there is a game, it depends on the teams standing on who will show up. The marching band plays at all the football games, providing they have the funds to also travel. There are also pep squads and cheerleaders who go to the games. During the spring, there is a pep band that plays for the Basketball teams. Each sport has a specific facility that they use. The basketball teams have the convocation center, the football team has the stadium, the baseball and softball teams have their stadium, and the tennis team has numerous courts. There are many more athletic teams at the this school and many more can be established.
