Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The computers on campus are thankfully up-to-date with the latest software that will allow typing documents, constructing figures and graphs, and being in-sync with the new technology of our day. The ATM, Academic Technology Mall, located in the very attractive and up-to-date Harvey Library, supplies students with all the materials needed for everything from completing their essays for English class to composing a portfolio for the business class. There are computers on all of the five floors of the library. Furthermore, there is Internet access set up in every dorm room, and there is a technician located on campus to aid in repairs.

Many students on campus bring their own computer. Still, others cannot. So, the accessibility to those who need them is good, but many students feel access could be better. This campus has new computers in almost every facility. However, they are not always available to the students at convenient times. The computer labs close at 11:45 p.m., which means pulling all-nighters trying to write a last-minute paper is, currently, not an option. Some dorms do have computers in them that allow you to print for free. But a majority of the time you have to pay to print, which becomes a pain. The speed of the Internet is acceptable and was recently updated to increase bandwidth. If you are trying to access it from the privacy of your room, you have to supply the wonderful Ethernet cord, and sometimes, the connection is not as good as it should be. The administration does block students from going on certain Web sites, and students definitely cannot download any free music or movies using campus Internet. However, one major plus is that the University provides e-mail accounts to all of its students.

Computers

It really depends on your department. As a computer science major I have access to some get computers and print for free. Other departments on campus have their own computer lab.

Reliability With Work Outside the Dorm

We have a beautiful and massive library that is used well everyday by all students at Hampton University. Sometimes it is easier to finish work in the library as opposed to anywhere else especially if one is able to find one of the quiet floors to be on. Sometimes it is frustrating to have to wlak to the library to find that most of the computers are taken but there has yet to be a day where they are all taken. The internet is really fast and our brand new dell pc with windows 7 and microsoft office 2010 makes life and work much easier. Sometimes some of the computers are down but there is no issue with going to a different floor in the library and using a computer there. They usually are crowded when we are dealing with midterms, final exams and presentations. The only problem I have had with the library is when one of the printer arent working and we have to wait or run to the bottom floor to see if it is working down there. When worst comes to worst, and sometimes it does, I found myself running to another building just to use their computers to print out what I need with the help of my USB flash drive. Other than those few flaws of using the computers in the library or anywhere on campus for that matter, it really is a big help.

Did You Know?

Hampton University began charging students to print in 2003 because of abuse of free printing privileges.

Hampton received 150 new Dell computers in 2002 upon the opening of the new journalism building.

There are 235 open, wired network connections in the library.

In 2004, Hampton University was recognized by Princeton Reivew/Forbes.com as one of America’s most connected Universities. This recognition comes after Hampton had been cited in 2000 and 2001, as one of Yahoo’s Most Wired 100 Colleges and Universities. Hampton began to wire all of its residence halls, academic halls, and administrative offices in 1999 and completed the entire campus in nine months.
