Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

All of the administrative buildings here are very attractive and somewhat luxurious. They are supplied with sufficient air-conditioning for comfort, and there is always a renovation in progress to make appearance even better. The Scripps Howard Building is a few years old and supplied with news-broadcasting televisions and very sufficient amenities catering to the faculty and students. This building brings a very positive impression to the campus and has generated great funds for the University. The new Student Center is a great focus on campus, as well. Being a few years old, it supplies students with a place to hang out, study, get a bite to eat, exercise, play games, and offices for student organizations to meet. In the fall of 2009, Hampton completed the Skin of Color Research Institute Center. It was built for research and teaching purposes to help improve understanding, treatment, and prevention of skin disorders that uniquely affect people with skins of color. The University is also currently undergoing construction for a new dorm facility and cafeteria. It also just received a grant to build a biomedical research center.

The campus is one of the most attractive in the nation. However, the dormitories on the campus are not as pleasing to the eye on the inside. HU takes much pride in the appearance of and structure outside of the schools and administrative buildings, but focuses less on the residence halls and gyms for the on-campus students. The dormitories are well constructed and are pretty on the outside, but the inside does not, in any way, compliment the outside. Students like the campus, but wish their primary living space could be as up-to-par as their place of learning. The same also goes for the gym facilities; students feel as though the gym is small and old, and needs to be either renovated or torn down altogether. There are also some complaints that classroom sizes are small, and there are some buildings that have yet to install air conditioning.

Cafeteria

The facilities at Hampton University are ok. The Student Center is one of the highlighted areas on campus. We need more vendors and selections of food on campus though.

The Campus Is Pretty

The outer appearance of Hampton and its buildings is very nice. The newer buildings, such as the library and the student center and very nice inside and out and are much more modern looking. The student center is a great place to hang out. The dorms and classroom buildings look nice on the outside, but the inside rooms are old and some look very run down.

Just a Little to Much History

As you may know, Hampton University is a HBCU: historically black college and university. Yes, it is largely accredited and will land you almost any job with a degree from here, but the buildings here don't seem to match the price I'm paying. $18,000 a month, and students receive a postage-stamp sized room, less than up to par restrooms, a small gameroom that's never open, buildings with no air-conditioning, elevators that work half the time, and small elementary student desks. The best buildings we have are the student center and the library. All this makes me wonder where is all our money going to? Come on HU.

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

There are recycling trash cans placed around campus. Organizations on and off campus also try to create programs, raise awareness, and create "green" drives around campus to elevate the problems of global warming.

Favorite Things To Do

Between classes, one can sit down to a smoothie in the Student Center, have a meal from Chick-fil-A, or bowl in the bowling alley without leaving campus.

Most students hang out in the Student Center between classes where there is a Lotta Java, Chick-fil-A, and Planet Smoothie. Students can bowl in the bowling alley for $5, work out in the fitness center, play games in the game room, or watch television in the TV room—all located in the Student Center. The Student Center is always packed, and students are almost always able to find something to buy, share a meal, or just have a conversation.
