College Prowler Take
The Greek life on HU’s campus is currently a dying culture. With sororities and fraternities being caught hazing and suspended from campus every year, the Greeks seem to be disappearing left and right. The only times students notice the Greeks wearing their paraphernalia or see them in uniform are for a big events like the Greek Step Show or Homecoming. The Greeks remain virtually invisible on campus, giving little to the community and the school. They are rarely seen participating in community service or organizing student events. The Greeks at HU wouldn’t even seem to be a social center, as they are on most campuses; they have no houses, and they throw no parties. One has to question what role, if any, do the Greeks play in life at HU?
These organizations do not seem to provide anything useful to students, nor do they seem to be out promoting themselves and drawing in new pledges. The initiation practices are kept secret, and it is almost imperative to know someone already part of the organization in order to gain entry. Most of these organizations provide an open forum at some point within the school year welcoming any and everyone who provides the necessary qualifications to be part of their seemingly “elite” organization when, in actuality, it shuns individuals who apply who do not fit the “look” of the organization. If Greeks at HU do not improve on their practices and entry policies, they will continue to whither away and soon become extinct.

Hampton doesn’t have a lot of Greek life. Other schools have houses for their Greeks and we don’t really have anything. |

Our Greek life is a mess. A lot of them seem to continue to get banned from campus, or they seem to be letting in just anybody nowadays. The only time I really see the Greeks is during their designated week when they are in the cafeteria and around campus wearing their letters. I don’t see what they do or what other organizations they support. |

The Greeks on campus are really not as popular as they are at other schools. I think they help you once you get out of school. I think it’s better to pledge grad chapter than undergrad, simply because of what they represent. |

We don’t have a lot of Greeks on campus, from what I’ve seen. I don’t see a lot that they do on campus, for the most part. |

The Greeks don’t do a whole lot on campus but flaunt their paraphernalia. When we had our RA association activities, they showed us no support at all. It’s basically like they stick together and don’t venture out past their own group on campus. |
