College Prowler Take
If there is not a local party going on, the usual club going, or a major event going on on-campus, there is usually nothing happening for HU students, especially those under 21. The best thing to do to find a good nightclub or bars is to head on out to Virginia Beach or Norfolk. Of course, there’s the problem of finding transportation, and nothing stays open past 2 a.m., so it tends to be a short night. Norfolk is the fastest and easiest place to find a good time on the weekends. Downtown Norfolk, at the waterfront, is slammed with bars and night clubs, which are designed specifically for the college crowd. Since Norfolk is a college town built around Old Dominion University and Virginia Commonwealth University, there is a young vibe in the air. Virginia Beach provides more of a local atmosphere, and the clubs on the Strip appeal to all sorts. One thing to look out for is that this isn’t just a college area, it’s a military area, too. Many students aren’t too thrilled to find themselves in the midst of a bunch of horny, crude sailors who have just pulled into port. The other option is to head to Newport News, where there are a few sporadic nightclubs that are around. For those under 21, the best option is to go to a movie or hang around the mall. Hampton, in general, is not the most happening town, but if you can handle laying back, hanging out, and just chilling at a local bar or restaurant for the evening, then you’ll do just fine here. Nightlife, for freshmen, consists of staying out late after curfew is lifted and hanging out by the females’ dorms.

This town is so boring at night. I remember this one night in the summer where my girls and I just drove around burning up gas looking around for things to do, and we ultimately found nothing at all. That was our night. |

There’s no nightlife at all, for real. There’s like Applebee’s or County Grill for some cheap drinks, but that’s about it. Good thing I’m not the biggest fan of the club scene because I would be out of luck. |

I haven’t been impressed with what Hampton has to offer for the night life. There’s the same clubs, same faces, same outfits, same everything. It’s a little better in Norfolk, but Virginia, in general, is not the hottest place to be. |

Hampton doesn’t have a lot to offer for a college student in search for something to do in the nighttime hours. |

Hampton is boring anytime, day or night. There have been lots of nights where I have sat at home on a Friday or Saturday night because there’s nothing at all to do. The clubs are corny and have the same ugly drunk dudes trying to push up on the same girls. |

The clubs around Hampton usually harvest the same college students and locals each night of the week. The clubs close at 2 a.m. and sometimes earlier, depending on if a fight breaks out or any other negative activity happens in or around the area.
Organization Parties
There are few organizational parties thrown off campus. Most organizational parties are held in the Student Center or in the sweltering Holland Gym with the lights on. These parties usually attract on campus freshmen and sophomores. Many juniors and seniors live off campus and have cars, therefore they don’t waste their time with such lame parties.
Club Listings
Hip hop music in a caribbean atmosphere, Sugar Ray is worth the drive and features regionally- and nationally-recognized DJs. Club Sugar Ray’s 754 S. Military Hwy. Norfolk (757) 535-6501
This place recieves mixed reviews, because although the music is good, the people it often brings like to get down and dirty while dancing. Girls complain that the guys are too grabby, while the guys complain that the girls are too snobby. Drink specials are pretty good, but are over relatively early. Ba Da Bing! 223 17th St. Virginia Beach (757) 321-1864
Bar Listings
Bennigan’s is mostly a weekend nighttime hangout when there is nothing else to do. One can enjoy drinks, good food, a friendly atmosphere, and plenty of familiar faces. There is no cover charge and the busiest nights are Thursday and Saturday. Bennigan’s 2029 Coliseum Dr Hampton (757) 838-9261
Here’s a nice place to go that has a somewhat older crowd—but not too old. It’s a little farther from Hampton, but also offers a getaway from the same students one sees throughout Hampton on a regular basis. There is not cover charge, but the food is excellent and reasonably priced. Southern Comfort Bar and Grill 9900 Jefferson Ave. Newport News (757) 594-9031
Located right near the Interstate, Crabbers offers good seafood and a nice lounge and bar setting. They often have a live band on Thursday and Friday nights. And after 10 p.m. on those days it’s 21 and up. There’s no charge to get in, but the drinks are not the cheapest. Crabber’s Restaurant and Lounge 2000 W Mercury Blvd. Hampton (757) 826-6441
Mitch’s is a somewhat low-key place to go if someone just wants to hang out with the locals more so than the students. It’s a friendly atmosphere that plays good music. It’s a small place but offers something to do at night. Must be 21. Mitch’s Pub 1241 Big Bethel Rd. Hampton (757) 827-9852
This is a little different from your average bar. It offers authentic home-cooked German cuisine and more than 100 international beer selections. It’s a great place if you want to change up the average night out. Bier Garden 434 High St. Portsmouth (757) 393-6022
What to Do if You're Not 21
There’s not a lot of nightlife offered for the 21-and-under individual. Most people hang out at Hooters or at Wal-Mart. Sometimes, house parties are thrown but finding free transportation may pose a challenge. It’s all about who you know.
