College Prowler Take

In the center of Hampton Roads, HU does not harbor any students off campus. If you cannot get a room on campus, then you are out of luck, as far as the University is concerned. It is absolute bliss living off campus as an upperclassman. You have privacy and freedom to entertain your friends, comfort that you will not get on campus, and freedom from the watchful eye and tight grasp of Hampton University officials. Most students agree that it can actually be a bit cheaper to live off campus, and it’s a beautiful thing if you can afford it. It is good because it prepares students for independence and true adulthood.

Off-campus housing prepares students for the outside world. On average, a good, clean apartment can range anywhere from $625 to $850 a month, which is roughly $300 to $400-plus, on an individual basis. Finding an affordable place off campus—near campus—is difficult. The nearest apartments are the Harbors, owned by the president of HU. They run about $750 for two bedrooms, a washer, and dryer. Carless students prefer staying here because it’s so close to campus. However, others choose not to because of the large number of HU students living there and surrounding the area. There are around 50 apartments that harbor HU students within a 16-mile radius from the school. One disadvantage of living off campus is that the public transportation is weak—having access to a car is imperative. Off-campus housing, though, is a savior to upperclassmen. The apartments and townhomes are an experience that should definitely be taken advantage of.

Living off campus kind of puts you out of the loop, so to speak, of on campus activities. People that live off campus don’t really know what’s going on and just come to campus to go to class. If there is something that happens on campus at night, on-campus people know about it—and that’s significant. Off-campus people may or may not hear about it later, and probably won’t care. It’s more convenient to live off campus because of the freedom and cost, but I think it enhances the whole college experience to live on campus.

Some people think moving to the Harbors is moving off campus, but really, it’s not. It’s still on campus in a sense because it’s right there. On-campus people are always lurking around. I definitely wouldn’t recommend there, but the whole off-campus experience is good. I plan to move off campus next semester. I think everyone should have the opportunity to live off campus for a semester or a year.

Hampton is a nice area to live, although it’s more expensive than the surrounding cities. Most people try to move to a place where there aren’t a lot of Hampton students, but as small as Hampton is, that’s almost impossible because the same places that take students and co-signers are within a reasonable distance from campus.

This is my first year being off campus, and it is splendid. Once you get a taste of the independence off campus life provides, moving back on campus is not even an option. It proves to be cheaper to live off campus anyway, depending on where you move and if you have a roommate or not. I have heard many roommate nightmares, so if you can afford it, I would say live alone!
