College Prowler Take

In the center of Hampton Roads, HU does not harbor any students off campus. If you cannot get a room on campus, then you are out of luck, as far as the University is concerned. It is absolute bliss living off campus as an upperclassman. You have privacy and freedom to entertain your friends, comfort that you will not get on campus, and freedom from the watchful eye and tight grasp of Hampton University officials. Most students agree that it can actually be a bit cheaper to live off campus, and it’s a beautiful thing if you can afford it. It is good because it prepares students for independence and true adulthood.

Off-campus housing prepares students for the outside world. On average, a good, clean apartment can range anywhere from $625 to $850 a month, which is roughly $300 to $400-plus, on an individual basis. Finding an affordable place off campus—near campus—is difficult. The nearest apartments are the Harbors, owned by the president of HU. They run about $750 for two bedrooms, a washer, and dryer. Carless students prefer staying here because it’s so close to campus. However, others choose not to because of the large number of HU students living there and surrounding the area. There are around 50 apartments that harbor HU students within a 16-mile radius from the school. One disadvantage of living off campus is that the public transportation is weak—having access to a car is imperative. Off-campus housing, though, is a savior to upperclassmen. The apartments and townhomes are an experience that should definitely be taken advantage of.

Many people like to live off campus after their sophomore year. It becomes the center to where people have parties at because not much happens during the year. Some of them are cheap some are expensive. It’s on a “you get what you pay for”. Some landlords give you little treats, maybe a couch or something. It has happened.

I love the fact that I got to move off it taught me so much responsibility. I was just limited and always had to cook and I needed to get a job.
