Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Parking on HU’s campus is nearly impossible. And to make it worse, bringing a car to school, whether commuting or living on campus, tends to be a necessary evil thanks to the lack of public transportation. Only juniors and seniors in good standing with the University are eligible for parking permits, and even then, it doesn’t guarantee you will get one. The prices for parking permits are about $50, which isn’t too high, but is still up there if all you’re doing is commuting back and forth to classes. There is no use trying to park without permits, or not during your designated permit time, because security is always on the lookout to give tickets, a boot, or even towing. Off-campus students have a hard time finding parking when they are going to class and are often late to class just because they were looking for a spot. It's best to get there early or choose early classes, which most off-campus students do in order to find a spot in a decent amount of time. If students have late classes, they often will have to get a spot in the overflow section of the parking lot called “Africa,” which is very far from campus. Catching a friend who’s parked close to campus and is about to leave is the best bet to avoid the walk to your car from the overflow section.

Freshmen can’t have cars on campus, so it’s not really an issue for first-year students to have a parking permit. Due to all the parking problems, having a car on campus is more of a burden than anything else. Most students enjoy walking around campus, but most would prefer a ride if they had the option. Some students don’t feel the need to buy campus decals because they don’t park their cars on campus or in the University parking lot to get to and from classes. But it creates a hassle when you’re trying to drop off someone or something on campus. This begins to affect freshmen and upperclassmen that don’t have cars. Campus police do not allow students to enter on campus without a decal, even if they are just dropping off someone. Whether the weather is bad or it’s late at night, they make no exception with allowing students to make an on-campus drop-off. They make students do a U-turn, and the student getting dropped off has to walk back to his or her room.

Transportation

Although, I freshmen cannot have a car on campus until they have 60 credits or a junior, transportation is very hard. Because Hampton University is not in the downtown atmosphere, therefore, having a car would be very useful. I do not have a car, so if I wanted to go to the mall or a club, I would have to take a cab which usually adds up to $30. To be a college student, a $30 cab ride is too expensive to go to any club or mall. As for me, back in D.C. I was use to taking the metro which was more convenient for me. I believe there should at least free shuttles for students. We paying $30,000 and we cannot get free shuttle at least?

Facts

Getting a Parking Permit

Only juniors and seniors can have cars on campus. Students, on or off campus, have to purchase decals for their vehicles. On-campus students can park anywhere on campus at any time. Commuter students must park in the Convocation parking lot, which is also known by students as “Africa” because it is such a far walk to classes. The parking there is always limited, and one is often forced to park in the overflow lot which is even farther.
