Hampton is very diverse...
Hampton is very diverse economically. We have students from many different economic backgrounds. However it is not very diverse in other aspects. We are a Christian-based African-American institution.

The girls outnumber the guys here by a lot. The girls here go way too far to get all dressed up and put on all this makeup just to see the same guys each and every day. It’s not that serious. |

The teams are consistently strong, and they usually display a lot of teamwork, and they don’t get as much recognition as they should. The IM sports give people that usually don’t have as much time to play organized team sports a chance to be full-time students and also keep in touch with their love of sports. |

Most people can’t wait to move off campus if they have the funds and opportunity. The bathrooms are the worst part. White is one of the nicer dorms, only because it’s still pretty new, and people haven’t had the chance to destroy it yet. |

These dorms are hideous. I think it’s terrible that with all the money we pay to be here, we are not even allowed our own refrigerator and microwave in our rooms. I’ve seen all types of critters and things with tails in my tenure here. I would recommend Holmes for the boys and McGrew for the girls. I would stay away from Queen Street and James Hall. |

I hate our dorms. I’ve been trying to move off campus, but my plans continue to fall through. The worst female dorm is Queen Street. I stayed there last year and had nothing but problems. The bathrooms there are by far the nastiest thing I have seen in my life. |

These dorms are fair. Of course, some are better than others. Overall, I think they are okay, for the most part. The only things I really hate about living on campus are all the rules. Visitation from the opposite sex is so limited, and they yank it away whenever they feel the need. I like Pierce Hall because it’s so intimate. I’d definitely have to stay away from James Hall just because it’s nicknamed ‘the ghetto.’ |

Hampton is an HBCU (Historically Black College and University), so there really is not a lot of diversity. |

There is not a lot of diversity on this campus. It’s like 90 percent African American. The only diversity one can see is the handful of foreign students they bring here for the sports teams. |

The small number of minorities here at Hampton stick together, and you don’t really see them much. |

Most of the teachers I’ve had at Hampton have been helpful and understanding. I’ve had the occasional teacher who tries to act like they can’t accept a valid excuse for a late assignment. I give my opinion on that teacher at evaluation time, but overall, I like my professors. |

I’m always in the ATM in the library typing something. I don’t have a computer in my room, but I’m working on that. There are times when I wish the computer lab stayed open a lot later because there have been times when I was not finished with what I had to do and time was up, it was closing. |

Hampton acts like this is a drug-free school zone, but they know students, at the very least, smoke weed, if not anything else. I don’t think these students want to sniff anything or put anything in their veins, but I definitely believe they will roll up any kind of herb with anything available and smoke it. |

The guys and girls here seem to interact well. Most people in general are pretty social. Guys don’t try to impress the girls like it seems the girls try to impress the guys. The girls seem real uppity, and the guys seem either real non chalant or really pressed to get the girl. |

It’s hard and costly getting around here locally without a car or access to one. The cabs are expensive, and the bus is out of the question. |

I think it takes too long to get to central places in Hampton. Being a student trying to get to central places like libraries and to Wal-Mart, there should at least be a shuttle to places like Strawberry Banks, and the driver will take you anywhere on campus you may need to go on campus. If necessary, a shuttle should charge 25 cents to take students around campus. |

There is no transportation around...
There is no transportation around campus at all. I recall once I had a package I had to carry from across campus behind James Hall. They wouldn’t give me a dolly because the University doesn’t believe women should operate them. No one offered me a ride seeing me struggle with the big package. It was awful. There should be a shuttle or something on campus. Transportation around here is pretty bad, too. |

This town is so boring at night. I remember this one night in the summer where my girls and I just drove around burning up gas looking around for things to do, and we ultimately found nothing at all. That was our night. |

The transportation situation...
The transportation situation around town is expensive. I guess the bus is cheap, but it takes so long to get somewhere on the bus. Cabs become expensive and I think they try to take people the long way to charge more. As far as this campus goes, there is nothing but a shuttle to take people to that expensive laundromat up the street. |

When I was a freshman, it was hard getting around to places off campus. Freshmen can’t have cars and I thought that was a terrible idea until I brought my car to Hampton. The parking is bad as it is. People who don’t have a car or don’t know anyone with one are just out of luck. |

I have inspired students to come here, and I want to continue to do so. This school has so much to offer its students, and I have been blessed to have received so much from this University. Thank you HU! |

They were always telling me that HU is a very good school, and that my experience would be one to remember, and it was. The academics I have received are superb. I especially like the fact that the classes were small, so my teachers could focus on me. |

HU was a riveting experience. I would call HU a gem, rough around the edges but smooth on the top. And it looks great on me—well, on my resume, at least. |

In four years, the greatest experience of mine at HU has been the teachers I’ve had for my English classes. The most horrifying experience is dealing with financial aid. You would not believe what a person can go through with a despicable school that wants to be stingy with its money. And, on top of that, tell you that they over-awarded you in your grant, and you have to pay it back. Overall, HU was a good experience. However appalled I might have felt at a particular time, this is my school, and I feel I made the right decision coming here. |
