College Prowler Take
No college campus is crime or incident free, and HU is no exception. The incidents have been minimal over the years, and overall, the campus of HU is relatively safe, and the administration has been working to make the campus even safer. There are now 24-hour security guards at the main gates to limit unauthorized vehicle access on campus. No one, other than students and those with proper verification, is allowed anywhere else on campus, without going through security, and it is the only entrance and exit in which outsiders may enter the campus. The downfall to this system is that there doesn’t seem to be anything stopping people on foot from entering campus, and students wish that there was easier access closer to their dorms or classrooms.
The police officers on campus are much more active than they were in previous years. Students genuinely roam the campus at all hours of the day and night and feel comfortable and safe doing so. There are blue boxes around campus that allow you to call campus police for help, and there is 24-hour emergency assistance ready and waiting. Having had a couple of incidents on campus and being only a few miles from the roughest place in the area in which crime is fairly active, HU police are on their guard. Hampton, in general, has a comparatively low crime rate compared to the surrounding Hampton Roads cities, and has a crime rate lower than the national average for cities its size.

I think the police take their job...
I think the police take their job a little too seriously, but I do think it’s safe. All these gates around and there’s only one way on and off. |

The campus is pretty safe. There...
The campus is pretty safe. There haven’t been any postings of wanted people for attempted robberies like before. It did used to be really dark back behind the infirmary, but now it’s very well lit. Everywhere else is pretty well lit, too. |

HU has pretty good police...
HU has pretty good police officers, so, like, I don’t think there’s a real high crime rate on campus. I heard those emergency lights on campus don’t work, but what would be the point of them anyway? If someone was chasing me, would I say ‘hold on Mr. Ax Murderer while I press this emergency button and talk to police’? |

I remember that attempted robbery...
I remember that attempted robbery a few years back, behind the infirmary, but they put so many lights back there now that you’re almost blinded when trying to walk to the Harbors. The police are pretty good with making sure things are safe and secure, for the most part. |

I don’t feel threatened by anyone...
I don’t feel threatened by anyone or anything on campus. The way the police are always around, it seems like they could almost spot someone who isn’t a student, anyway. I don’t even hear of anything crime related for the most part on campus. |
