Transportation

Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town The best way to get around is a car or to have a friend with a car. If you don't have either one, then it's cheaper to take the bus.
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • A cab ride to the airport costs around $35.
  • There is no shuttle to the airport from Hampton University. Most people who do not have cars take a taxi.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Any HU student who does not have a car or know someone with one will surely feel hopeless. There is practically no public transportation in the Hampton Roads area. Transportation outside the University is not preferred, but there are forms of transportation like taxis and the HRT bus system. HU supplies no form of off-campus transportation for the non-drivers on campus. The only thing close to HU providing transportation is a shuttle taking students to the laundromat and back. It runs every hour of the day during business hours, and students have to call in to assure pick-up. The only form of transportation for students to get off campus consists of taxicabs or the buses. Taxicabs make a load of money off HU students because they are always going to Wal-Mart, the mall, out to eat, or somewhere to find entertainment. However, they are expensive to utilize. Moreover, taxicabs may want to charge more because HU has a reputation of having “well-off” students.

Then, there is the experience of riding HRT, Hampton Roads Transit. The buses run once an hour. So, if you are in a hurry or just have somewhere to go, the bus is not the most convenient way. Though the bus is there and does provide a way, it is not the most reliable way if one is aiming to arrive somewhere in a timely fashion. It’s clean, safe, and appreciated by some of the locals, but definitely not by Hampton students. If you are going to a school in the country, make sure you have a car or make sure your friends have one because, if not, you will eventually feel “SOL,” seriously out of luck.

Mooch or Have the Bucks

Transportation is a bust unless you can pay for a taxi or have some upper class friends. I was very disappointed to find that this, of all the schools on my list, doesn't have a free shuttle.

Transportation

The transportation options are extremely limited. Your options are a cab or a city bus. The city bus is not expensive but timely and not worth the wait. The cabs are expensive. A cab ride

15 mins away can run you thirty dollars. It would immensely benefit students if there were shuttles like on other campuses.
