Best Ways to Get Around Town

  • The best way to get around is to have a friend with a car. If you don't have one, then it's cheaper to take the bus.

How to Get to the Airport

  • A cab ride to the airport costs around $35.
  • There is no shuttle to the airport from Hampton University. Most people who do not have cars take a taxi.

College Prowler Take

Any HU student who does not have a car, or know someone with one, will surely feel hopeless. There is practically no public transportation in the Hampton Roads area. Transportation outside the University is not preferred, but there are forms of transportation like taxis and the HRT bus system. HU supplies no form of transportation for the non-drivers on campus. The only forms of transportation for students consists of taxicabs or the buses. Taxicabs make a load of money off HU students, because they are always going to Wal-Mart, the mall, out to eat, or somewhere to find entertainment. However, they are expensive to utilize. Moreover, taxicabs may want to charge more because HU has a reputation of having “well-off” students.

Then there is the experience of riding HRT, Hampton Roads Transit. The buses run once an hour. So, if you are in a hurry or just have somewhere to go, the bus is not the most convenient way. Though the bus is there and does provide a way, it is not the most reliable way if one is aiming to arrive somewhere in a timely fashion. It’s clean, safe, and appreciated by some of the locals, but definitely not by Hampton students. If you are going to a school in the country, make sure you have a car, or make sure your friends have one because, if not, you will eventually feel “SOL,” seriously out-of luck.

When I was a freshman, it was hard getting around to places off campus. Freshmen can’t have cars and I thought that was a terrible idea until I brought my car to Hampton. The parking is bad as it is. People who don’t have a car or don’t know anyone with one are just out of luck.

The transportation situation...

The transportation situation around town is expensive. I guess the bus is cheap, but it takes so long to get somewhere on the bus. Cabs become expensive and I think they try to take people the long way to charge more. As far as this campus goes, there is nothing but a shuttle to take people to that expensive laundromat up the street.

There is no transportation around...

There is no transportation around campus at all. I recall once I had a package I had to carry from across campus behind James Hall. They wouldn’t give me a dolly because the University doesn’t believe women should operate them. No one offered me a ride seeing me struggle with the big package. It was awful. There should be a shuttle or something on campus. Transportation around here is pretty bad, too.

I think it takes too long to get to central places in Hampton. Being a student trying to get to central places like libraries and to Wal-Mart, there should at least be a shuttle to places like Strawberry Banks, and the driver will take you anywhere on campus you may need to go on campus. If necessary, a shuttle should charge 25 cents to take students around campus.

It’s hard and costly getting around here locally without a car or access to one. The cabs are expensive, and the bus is out of the question.

Norfolk International Airport is the most widely used airport in the Hampton Roads area. It is approximately 20 minutes from Hampton University. The Yellow Cab Taxi is the cheapest way to get to the airport. During the holidays, sometimes students with cars offer rides for fees to make some extra cash. They post fliers with their names and numbers around campus.
