Best Ways to Get Around Town

  • The best way to get around is to have a friend with a car. If you don't have one, then it's cheaper to take the bus.

How to Get to the Airport

  • A cab ride to the airport costs around $35.
  • There is no shuttle to the airport from Hampton University. Most people who do not have cars take a taxi.

College Prowler Take

Any HU student who does not have a car, or know someone with one, will surely feel hopeless. There is practically no public transportation in the Hampton Roads area. Transportation outside the University is not preferred, but there are forms of transportation like taxis and the HRT bus system. HU supplies no form of transportation for the non-drivers on campus. The only forms of transportation for students consists of taxicabs or the buses. Taxicabs make a load of money off HU students, because they are always going to Wal-Mart, the mall, out to eat, or somewhere to find entertainment. However, they are expensive to utilize. Moreover, taxicabs may want to charge more because HU has a reputation of having “well-off” students.

Then there is the experience of riding HRT, Hampton Roads Transit. The buses run once an hour. So, if you are in a hurry or just have somewhere to go, the bus is not the most convenient way. Though the bus is there and does provide a way, it is not the most reliable way if one is aiming to arrive somewhere in a timely fashion. It’s clean, safe, and appreciated by some of the locals, but definitely not by Hampton students. If you are going to a school in the country, make sure you have a car, or make sure your friends have one because, if not, you will eventually feel “SOL,” seriously out-of luck.

You have to make friends with people who have a car. If you don’t want to pay a lot for transportation that your best bet. Usually when you’re riding with someone they won’t really ask you for gas money, you’ll just repay them a different way.

If you need to get somewhere you better make a lot of friends who have cars. Sometimes the school would provide buses to Wal-Mart though.

Other schools have some sort of way to get places, like a bus or something. When I got here I was shocked. You have to take a taxi to get everywhere, which can be very expensive!!

Transportation on HU Campus

B+

There are very few ways of transportation in Hampton, Virginia if you do not own a car. However most places on campus are within a 15 minute walking distance depending on where you are on campus. Most students that want an alternate food choice normally go off campus toward downtown Hampton or toward Mercury Blvd. which has the majority of the commercial restaurant establishments. Some students were raised in the city public transportation isn't foreign to them, but Hampton is far from city life and buses tend to run very slow and once on the hour which makes it inconvenient to students, therefore we are forced to call a cab or carpool with a friend.
