Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are many words that can be used to describe Hampton’s weather: unpredictable, crazy, indecisive, bipolar. It tends to change, not day to day, but hour to hour as the day progresses. Much of this weather phenomenon is due to living right on the water. For those not from the area, weather is one of the leading frustrations. Flip-flop weather, combined with an abundance of pollen and other allergens, leads a lot of people to become ill for part of the year. On most days when the sun is out, there are beautiful clouds in the sky, and the beautiful scenery of the sea bordering the campus makes for wonderful eye candy. Then, dark clouds will surface at random, bringing forth rain showers that were completely unexpected.

The summers are usually very hot, and the winters are cold, but there is rarely even a single day of snow. In recent years, it snowed a bit and school had to be closed because Virginia is not equipped to handle even the least bit of snow. The rumor is that there is only one snow plow for each city in Hampton Roads. The fall provides a very quick change from warm to cool to a somewhat-chilling cold that normally leaves residents with little time to adapt. Lastly, the spring consists of light rains, but has the most beautiful weather of all the seasons. Spring kind of makes up for the crazy weather throughout the rest of the school year. Weather change is constant in this area of Virginia, so always expect a random weather change. Carry a compact umbrella just in case it decides to pour at any given hour.

Not to Bad for a First Experience

I live in a cold state where half the year is winter. When I found out that Hampton was close to the water I thought instantly it was going to be like an iceberg, but surprisingly it wasn't that bad when I got here.

Weather Machine

There's a Hampton myth that our school's president controls the weather on campus with a weather machine that he keeps in his office. The weather on campus is always different than the weather in the rest of the city. It's always nice on special occassions.

Fall to Summer!

I enjoy it! It can be windy, rainy, but there are all mostly great days. Classes aren't too far from dorms nor is the cafeteria. Although since we are right on the water it can flood and be very brezzy.
