Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As a liberal arts college, Hanover places strong emphasis on learning inside and outside of the classroom, and strives for an interdisciplinary approach to academics. The professors are the real stars of the College and are pretty fantastic. Obviously, there are some professors that rub students the wrong way, but for the most part, the professors are highly talented, caring individuals who truly love to teach. There are no teaching assistants at Hanover, so professors teach all of their own classes, and most have terminal degrees in their areas of study.

Discussion-based classes are the norm, and most classes have under 15 students, so discussions are lively and personal. Professors are usually willing to work with students on an individual basis or make allowances for personal issues. They are often in their offices and have frequent walk-in hours. Students and professors make personal connections and friendships that go beyond the classroom. Many professors pass out their home phone numbers and invite students to their homes for study parties, movie nights, or celebration dinners.

Great Professors

The professors on campus are easy to get in contact with for advice or assistance. They are happy to help students if needed, but they do not *tell* their students what to do. We are challenged to become better thinkers, speakers and writers and encouraged to think openly and discuss our points of view. The cirriculum and workload for most students is usually pretty rigorous and the only reason I didn't give the Academics an A or an A+ is because it can seem impossible to get an A at this school sometimes. That and the fact that the computer science program can be difficult to manage because of the lack of professors in this field. However, it's usually pretty easy to form study groups and there are free tutors for whatever subject you may be struggling with.

Learning Politics at Hanover College

To obtain a political science degree at Hanover College, we as students, must be able to provide a collegial level of discussion in the classrooms. The workload is quite heavy because the professors like us to be up to date with current events as well as the required reading of the text that they give us. The curriculum consists of the students taking up to nine political science classes to graduate and then doing an independent study. Hanover College is great at finding internships for us and we have the opportunity to work in Washington DC for a semester if we choose to do it. This provides great real life experience and provides us with an opportunity network for a job.
