College Prowler Take
As a part of the general degree requirements at Hanover, students take physical activity courses during their four years at Hanover. This means that all students come into contact with our athletic coaches, who teach those classes. Most students would say that the coaches at Hanover are very unique. They know students by name and really care about the well-being of their athletes. Every year, Hanover is a competitive opponent in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in football, men’s basketball, women’s soccer, cross country, and track and field. Because Hanover is Division III, many students who would not get to play sports at a larger college have the opportunity to continue their athletic careers here. Many students and alumni support the sports teams, and tailgating before football and basketball games is popular. Intramural sports at Hanover are also very popular. There are often 10 to 20 teams for volleyball, basketball, and floor hockey. During spring term, there’s a huge wiffleball tournament put on by the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. This often has 60 teams playing in it. For 1,000 students, 60 teams is an enormous majority of student participation.

“IM sports can be a ton of fun and a lot of people participate in them—athletes and people with no athletic experience. IMs are more flexible in their schedules, and they’re self-officiated. Floor hockey is an especially popular IM sport. Participants range from really competitive, organized teams to groups of friends joining together. Both have a great time. The environment is light, fun, and exciting. Once the playoffs start, some of the games will draw some fans.” |

“Intramural sports are so much fun at Hanover. They would become more of a success if everyone participated, but there are always large teams for volleyball and basketball. Coed floor hockey, which is played in our old gym, is popular as well.” |
