Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Dorm life has steadily improved in recent years. Renovations to nearly all residence halls provide students with clean, updated living spaces. Rooms are usually fairly small, but they have beds that can be lofted or bunked to create more floor space. Bathrooms are shared by the hall, usually between 16 to 36 people. Lounge areas are on each floor, with a larger area on the first floor and in the basement. Freshmen live together in the first-year dorms, which is great for getting to know your classmates and adjusting to college life together.

Upperclassmen have a few more choices for on-campus living, either in Greek houses, traditional residence halls, three- or four-person suites, or in on-campus apartment-style buildings. Crowe Hall was completely gutted and renovated in 2009 and boasts singles, doubles, and suites in an air-conditioned building. Greenwood and Ogle are the best places on campus for independent living. These facilities have new carpeting, air conditioning, several bedrooms, bathrooms, and a common living area. Throw in the theme houses, Greek houses, and apartment-style suites, and there is a style of living for everyone here. As long as you can get through your freshman year in a dorm, most students are able to live wherever they choose for the rest of their three years.

Hanover College Dorms

The dorms at Hanover are pretty decent from what I've seen. Upperclassmen dorms are obviously better and tend to be newer and air-conditioned. However, even the freshman housing was just recently redone and is pretty nice. In my opinion, the best places to live are the suites. I lived in Greenwood last year and will live there again next year. The rooms are big, the ceilings are high, and the living room is great!

Some Good, Some Bad

Of the housing on campus, those that have just been redone are in great conditions, but some, such as Katherine Parker, badly need redone.

HC Housing

The freshman dorms at Hanover College aren’t great, but the options are much better for upperclassmen and greek life members. Some housing is much further away than other housing on campus with most freshman dorms located in the center of campus.

Also Available Greek housing is available for members of fraternities and sororities. Within the Greek houses, there are several styles of housing. Standard dorm-style double rooms are available in some, but most have a rack-room setup. In this arrangement, Greek students share a three-person room with desks, closets, dressers, and personal furniture, and sleep in the rack room. The rack room is a room on the top floor of the house where everyone has a bed. This way, students can go to bed at any time they want without disturbing roommates or waiting for their roommate to turn out the light. Room assignments in these houses are determined by each individual Greek house.
