Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Campus Security is a very visible presence on campus, driving around in their cars or golf carts. They have a 24-hour hotline in case of emergencies, but the main way they interact with students is by giving out parking tickets and dealing with drinking on campus. Although alcohol is not allowed on campus, Campus Security tends to turn a blind eye, especially to fraternity parties, unless things get out of hand. The main reason people get written up, which usually involves a fine and counseling, is for a fight or alcohol poisoning. Even then, Campus Security’s main goal is to make sure that everyone is safe or is taken to the hospital when needed.

Hanover has a presence policy, which means simply being in the presence of alcohol could get you written up. But security does not go into dorms or frat houses without a reason, and usually the Student Life staff has to tell the campus police to search a living unit or go into a fraternity house to check for alcohol or drugs. The only thing they are strict about is parking. At Hanover, the campus police really are there to help you and keep you safe—not get anyone in trouble.

Attendence Policies Make You Feel Like You Are in High School

Going to class should be a student's responsibility but at Hanover, most professors have an "attendence policy." These attendence policies tell you how many acceptable days you can miss their class (usually 1 to 3) before they impose a punishment. The punishments are not restricted by the college so it is okay for a professor to take 5% off your final grade for every class you miss. It feels like high school where teachers would punish you for missing class. While all students should go to class, I've seen these attendence policies affect hardworking students. Attendence Policies at Hanover appear a little over the top.

Pssshhh I Streak Drunk Like It's My Job

If you are being obnoxious, you will get a slap on the wrist. Things got a little more strict with the drinking policy this year so now there are monetary fines. Also parking fines are terrible now! They both used to be a joke, but they are starting to adopt university rules and its getting a little tough.

Not Very Strict at All

The strictness on campus is not very high, the thing they are most strict about is parking violations which are very easy to avoid making. Overall the campus security is really laid back because there is never anything really bad for them to have to get strict about.

Visitation Policies

All residence buildings have a 24-hour visitation policy. Individual halls can make their own rules, but most keep the 24-hour policy. Students of the opposite gender must be escorted by someone who lives in the building or hall.
