Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

One of the things Hanover has been really working on in recent years is increasing diversity on campus. Although the majority of the student body is made up of white, middle-class students, there are many students from other racial and social backgrounds. At Hanover, there are students from 36 states and several countries, including China, Germany, Ghana, India, Italy, Spain, Tanzania, and Vietnam. Students of different religions, political beliefs, and sexual orientations are also accepted and welcomed. There are many different groups and organizations on campus that celebrate these differences, like the Benjamin Templeton Scholarship Program, the Haq Center, the International Club, Kaleidoscope, and Love Out Loud. These organizations hold many events on campus to spread awareness and educate the campus community about issues related to diversity.

Anyone is welcome at Hanover, and it is easy to find a place to fit in. Cliques do form, of course, and often students don't make the effort to break out and meet new people, but because the student body is so small, it's impossible to avoid meeting people, whether they are like and different from you. The campus supports all types of diversity, and most students at Hanover would say they do the same.

Small Campus, Big Racist Problem

There are students from all over the world that attend Hanover College. However, race has been a problem at the college and in the surrounding communities. There is a very small African-American population here. In the five months that I have attended college here, there have been two incidents involving African-American students that were not handled well by the college. Instead of talking about the problems with the entire student body, they made matters worse by segregating the African-American students and having a meeting with only them. A good friend of mine (who is African-American) also said that she does not feel welcome in town. Many of the people in the southern small towns we are surrounded by are racist.

Diversity at Hanover

The diversity on campus is failry high when it comes to acceptance and sexual preference. It is a predominantly white college as well as a predominantly christian/catholic college, but there are no tensions between those majorities and any minorities that are present. There is a pretty high concentration of asian students for a college of its size. The economic backgrounds are fairly diverse, and there are many different political beliefs present on campus.

A Handful

At Hanover, they strive to have ethnic students. They give them more scholarships to come to our school.
