Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Safety is rarely an issue at Hanover. Because of the College's isolated and rural location, usually the only people on campus are students, faculty, staff, and the occasional community member. Sometimes strangers come on campus, but they are usually pretty noticeable because almost everyone in the Hanover community knows one another. Petty theft is sometimes an issue, but most of the time students feel very safe and comfortable on campus. Students typically leave backpacks, purses, and other bags outside of the dining hall without fear of theft, and most residents feel comfortable leaving their dorm rooms unlocked during the day. All of the external doors of the residence halls have locks, so only students issued keys for that building can enter. Campus Security is a highly visible and effective presence on campus. Many students know the security officers by name and are friendly with them. Most students interact with Campus Security because of parking tickets or problems with drinking on campus.

Health Services is located in Lynn Gym and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Individual appointments can be made by dropping in or by calling the center. They offer physical exams, testing, immunizations and allergy shots, and can prescribe medicine. Services can be billed to your student account, but there is no fee for office visits.

Campus Crime

In the past few years we have had dramatic events transpire: a student set a building on fire during a Wiccan ritual, a black student stabbed an allegedly racist boyfriend of a student, and a student was just raped by her hometown stalker, but other than that, Hanover is squeaky clean. Three crazy events in three years versus almost 200 years of peace and quiet. Fine in my books. I have personally never felt unsafe, nor have any of my friends. I love our beautiful campus and go night hiking in the 600 acres of woods weekly.

Hanover Campus Security

The campus is small and well lit; it is not scary to walk places alone, even at night. Most dorms are safe, and I am usually comfortable leaving my door unlocked when I leave my room (as long as I am staying in the building!). Security is very willing to work with you on anything from parking tickets to stolen items, to picking you up from the parking lot late at night and drivng you back to your dorm.

Safety and Security on Campus

I have rarely ever felt unsafe on campus. It is necessary to lock your bike and cars to avoid people borrowing them without asking. Campus Security is very against the student life drinking and often times restricts any kind of college experience because of their strict rules and reactions to student drinking.
