Attendence Policies Make You Feel Like You Are in High School

Going to class should be a student's responsibility but at Hanover, most professors have an "attendence policy." These attendence policies tell you how many acceptable days you can miss their class (usually 1 to 3) before they impose a punishment. The punishments are not restricted by the college so it is okay for a professor to take 5% off your final grade for every class you miss. It feels like high school where teachers would punish you for missing class. While all students should go to class, I've seen these attendence policies affect hardworking students. Attendence Policies at Hanover appear a little over the top.

Madison Is Great

Hanover is tiny with not much to do, but Madison is just 15 minutes down the road and the town is great. Full of friendly people and historic sights in lower Madison, or for those that prefer it, upper Madison has the shopping you need and want in a more modern setting.

Greek

Greek life is whatever, I think it's a really dominate because half of the student body are affiliated. There are four sororities and 5 fraternities, it's pretty easy to get into one. They all wear their greek clothing constantly, and have better food at their house, if they offer it. Most of the Greeks live in a rack room type of housing. The parties are decent, except for the sororities. Sororities don't throw parties, just one in the whole year and not many people show up to it. What I dislike about greek life however, is the fact when one quits a fraternity or sorority, the whole house ignores them for the rest of their college years, as if their friendship before didn't matter. Other than that, they don't view negatively towards non-Greek students.

Computers

Computer labs are really well equipped, we have a 24 hr. computer lab on campus. The wifi though is terrible, so it feels like we're still on dial-up. People at IT, however, are really good at what they do. Some computer programs needed for classes are not available at the 24 hr. computer lab. There is also money on your student account for printing, and some students think that's more than they need, but I don't think so. I always have to put more money on my account.

No Off-Campus Housing

The school typically does not allow off-campus housing unless you live in local community and commute to campus

Hanover Campus Security

The campus is small and well lit; it is not scary to walk places alone, even at night. Most dorms are safe, and I am usually comfortable leaving my door unlocked when I leave my room (as long as I am staying in the building!). Security is very willing to work with you on anything from parking tickets to stolen items, to picking you up from the parking lot late at night and drivng you back to your dorm.

Do Your Best

If you get good grades and do well on the ACT or SAT it is possible to get a decent amount of aid. Composite scoring on the ACT and SAT also helps. If you have a strength or a special talent it is good to check to see if there is a scholarship avialable at the school.

Availability of Parking

There are plenty of available parking spots all over campus. If you want to park near your residence hall instead of the freshman lot there is a specific amount of time you can keep it there without geting a ticket.

The Dig on Dining

There are three dining option on capmus; the Underground (UG), the Campus Center cafeteria (CC), and the Shoebox. All are good options and have decent food. However, after eating at any of these places for an extended period of time it gets old. I live in a greek house and we have our own cook which has been very beneficial to me. The food is better and healthier.

Hanover College Social Life and Community

Hanover is a very safe community on and off campus. Our general location is pretty secluded, however there are major cities all within about 2 hours or less in each direction, which is nice if a student needs to do some shopping. Downtown Madison is the nearest attraction, including many good restaurants, stores, and the Ohio River. Upper Madison contains more fast food along with Walmart, a bowling alley, and a movie theater. Hanover has many varsity athletic teams as well as intermural sports, so there is usually some type of athletic event going on. Our Campus Activities Board also does an excellent job in bringing various types of performers onto campus.

Always Wanting to Talk

I came to Hanover because of the academia in particular. I visited before I decided on Hanover and met with much of the history faculty, and I was in love. Class discussion is a major part of class, as well as small classes in the 10-15 person range. They love to meet after class, and will talk to you about anything, even career advice.

The Internet Is Good Until It Dies.

For having over 1000 people accessed to the internet, the internet moves pretty quickly...when it works. However, the Internet often stops working several times a week for anywhere from 5 minutes to a couple of hours. If that was fixed, the grade would be much better.

Some Good, Some Bad

Of the housing on campus, those that have just been redone are in great conditions, but some, such as Katherine Parker, badly need redone.

Overall Good

The athletic centers on the Hanover College campus are in great conditions and relatively new. All other campus facilities are in good shape and if not there are plans on improving.

Very Fun Weather

Sometimes there is amazing weather, then other times there is rain, snow, etc. But honestly that's what you get anywhere you go.

Many Family Style Choices

There are many resturants near Hanover, most of the students don't really realize it though. They have to kind of know the area to really understand where all the good food is.

Mostly Walking

We walk mostly everywhere. It's a small campus and you don't really need a car. If you're going to a bar there's always someone who is the designated driver. We have an shuttle that takes weekly trips to Walmart for people needing to go there that don't have a car.

Nightlife

The club and bar scene is not a popular way of partying. Our fraternities have weekly weekend parties. This is also the way underage students party. There are other ways to have fun for those that do not drink. There is usually a play or seminar for those that don't wish to go out and party.

It's Pretty Good.

If the frats are having a party and you're on the list, you're generally in for a good night. If not, it's really kind of up to you to make your own entertainment. Saturday nights are better than Friday nights.

Night Life

On the weekends, the frat houses often offer a place to go hang out or party. Its an excellent place to have a great time. The college also offers a variety of events such a movie nights or hire comedians to perform. The social life here at Hanover is very solid as long as you make an attempt to find something to do.

VERY Small Town

Hanover is just a few miles away from historic downtown Madison. It's a neat place with a lot of local culture. Upper Madison has a lot of fast food places and a Walmart and...that's about it. Hanover definitely has a small town feeling. Sometimes it's nice, other times you really just want to get into the city.

Off Campus

There are some options off campus, but most student tend to live on campus.

Very Generous

Hanover has been very generous in the amount of financial aid they've given me. The hardships with the economy did not keep them from helping their students afford to go here.

Off-Campus Dining

I enjoy the options we have off-campus, but a few more options would be nice.

Drug Scene

Drugs are prevalent on Hanover Campus. Alcohol is the substance that the majority used but marijuana is a common substance used. It is uncommon to go to a fraternity house or party and not find alcohol or some drugs.
