College Prowler Take

Opinions on the quality of campus dining at Harvard run the gamut from total disgust to lavish praise. In general, students admire the beautiful architecture of Annenberg and most of the House dining facilities, but many students don’t believe that the ambience of the dining halls make up for the less-than-stellar cuisine served up by Harvard University Dining Services (HUDS). However, students can use their Crimson Cash at a select number of restaurants in Harvard Square, making Harvard’s dining opportunities appear a bit brighter. Most of the complaints about food quality come from first-year students who are victims of Annenberg, where food is mass-produced to serve more than 1,600 freshmen. Upperclassmen note that food quality does improve after freshman year, however.

From what I have heard from visiting friends, the food is actually pretty good here, even though all the students love to complain about it every night. If you aren’t up for the dining hall, Harvard has a couple of places such as the conveniently located Greenhouse and the Loker Commons that serve up decent pizza or grill food. Infact, each semester Harvard gives you $50 to spend at these campus restaurants.

The food is horrendous. It’s a shame we pay so much money for awful meals. Everything is low quality. And there’s only one type of meal plan. Also, they don’t offer late meals like some other places.

The food on campus varies greatly. All 1,600-somefirst-years eat in magnificent Annenberg Hall, a dining hall that more closely resembles a cathedral than a dining area. Unfortunately, I think Harvard spent all their money on the building and had nothing left to spend on the less-than-appetizing food. However, after your freshman year, everyone will eat in his or her House dining hall.

The food is fine. There is always plenty of variety each meal, with a full salad bar, cereal bar, cold cut bar at lunch, soups, pastas every meal. The dining services are also very accommodating of personal needs and preferences. The only bad thing is that they don’t serve cookies at dinnertime (their cookies are amazing). The dining halls are nice; the upperclassman Houses’ are very cozy.

The Greenhouse has yummy Chick-fil-A sandwiches and pizza, and it’s super-convenient especially for those pre-meds who live in the Science Center. But I wish the dining halls were a bit more creative with their menu selection.

Did You Know?

Parents can send their children care packages through Harvard University Dining Services (HUDS) that students can pick up at their House dining hall (or at Annenberg for freshmen).

Interhouse restrictions often bar non-residents from dining at a particular House during certain meals. See www.dining.harvard.edu/residential_dining/halls_interhouse.html for a schedule of restricted times.

Each dining hall offers late-night snacks in each House dining hall Sunday through Thursday. These “Brain Breaks” are set up to help students who are studying.
