College Prowler Take
Harvey Mudd gets the reputation of being too focused on academics to hold any athletes or athletic interest; however, a lot of Mudders did play a sport in high school. On the other hand, the sport of choice for many Mudders is John Madden Football. During freshman year, everyone has to go through the initiation of one semester of Physical Fitness for Life (appropriately nicknamed PFD). This class forces some Mudd students to actually climb out from behind their computers. The only other way around this requirement is to participate in a varsity sport. Yes, there are people here who would never exercise if they didn’t have to, but there are also tons of exercise buffs who play sports, work out frequently, and kick butt in the intramural games. The hardest problem to face here when dealing with athletics is time management. It is possible to be on a varsity team and pass all of your classes, but it is a lot harder. Most Mudders give up their high school sport because they simply don’t have the time to both do homework and work out. There are physical education requirements, and there are a lot of fun classes you can take (swing dance, rock climbing, fly fishing) in lieu of traditional sports. When it comes down to it, the average Mudder just doesn’t have the time for sports. The Claremont Consortium allows for some cross-school rivalry, but on average, HMC students would rather have a good time than attack any of the other schools. Students Speak Out

The school does not really...
The school does not really participate in sports, but dorms do engage in cross-campus IM sports. These can be a lot of fun, such as inner tube water polo.

Varsity sports aren't huge at...
Varsity sports aren't huge at Mudd, but they are definitely present. We have combined sports teams with Scripps College and Claremont McKenna College. There's a pretty good amount of swimmers, and a lot of track and field people at Mudd. Intramural sports have a presence, too. We divide into teams based on dorms. Participation varies from dorm to dorm. There's a pretty big array of sports, which is fun.

Varsity sports are something I...
Varsity sports are something I don't pay much attention to. We have some good D-III teams, but it's background noise to me. The intramurals are pretty intense. We have events for all the typical sports and some dorms even send out multiple teams. However, we also throw in a few non-traditional competitions, such as hot dog eating. Even more fun is when the professors send out the Geezer team for a sport. They're very good at soccer.

People go join CMC varsity sports. On campus, there are lots of random sports like unicycling, ultimate Frisbee, and capture the flag.

Those part of the...
Those part of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps teams are very committed to their sport. It takes a lot of discipline to maintain a Mudder's academic schedule while doing the necessary practices. Intramural sports are huge, especially inner tube water polo!

School Spirit
Harvey Mudd is not a traditional school, and it does not have traditional school spirit. Students here don’t root for the CMS teams, and they don’t know the alma mater. If you were to look in from the outside, Mudd seems apathetic. However, every student at Mudd knows that they are part of a wonderful community, and it does show at times. Intramural games usually have more spectators than any other sports, and Mudders cheer for each other wildly. Students often complain about Mudd and the workload here, but if anyone else insults Mudd within earshot, Mudders will be up in arms to defend their school. It is an honor to come here, and everyone at Mudd respects each other, even if our respect manifests itself strangely (pranks, for example). There is a definite Mudd spirit, and though we may not wear HMC shirts or paint our faces black and gold, we stick together. Got school spirit! Yes we do! A big part of school spirit here is making sure people stay in school, since it is very easy to slack off after just a few semesters. The community feeling arises not from football scores, but from surviving frosh chemistry. There are no rallies, but there are parties to celebrate staying alive through finals. The spirit of Mudd is such that everybody here empathizes with everyone else. After all, we did all have to take Systems Engineering, and we all failed a test or two. Learning to lean on each other for support and partying like there’s no tomorrow, every student here knows that Mudd is a special place.
Getting Tickets
You don’t need tickets for any games. Everything is free, and there are usually good seats to be had.
Most Popular Sports
Although Mudders are usually too swamped with homework and projects to get out to do physical activities, it is common to see people throwing Frisbees on the grass when a major break is starting or when the sunny so-cal weather kicks in. In terms of varsity teams, of the few who do participate, a big majority of Mudders join cross-country, track and field, and swim.

Did You Know?For those who are fanatic about tennis, CMC has the Bizantz Family Tennis Center, which features 12 tennis courts. Even though Mudd is not known for its athletics, its students find a lot of pride in Intramural sports. For Inner-tube waterpolo, the nerdy Mudders actually beat the CMC jocks.
