Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The food on campus is decent. Breakfast on the weekdays and brunch on the weekends have a smoothie bar (students love this). One good thing about living in a five college consortium is that you have many more options for dining. If you don’t like the food at HMC, wander around and try the food at other campuses. Other options are buying macaroni from the Coop, waiting until Jay’s Place opens to get pizza, or cook for yourself. There are a lot of ways to avoid the dining hall blues. Rotation is the key to avoid eating the same meal day in and day out. However, because students have such busy schedules, sometimes even walking to another dining hall is just too much effort.

There are also specialty items that parents can order for their children through HMC’s Dining Services, such as care packages and birthday cakes. Students, be sure to take advantage of special events and tables run by Mudd. Mudders may complain a lot about the food, but it’s more an issue of variety than anything else. As long as you take the time to walk to another dining hall every once in a while, you’ll be able to avoid the repetition of HMC meals.

Lots of Places to Eat

If you ever get tired of eating at Mudd then you can always go to one of the other dinning halls in the 5Cs. However, Mudd is one of the best dining halls with a big variety (however, sometimes for the best there is a line). Flex can be used for meals or to get midnight snacks at Jay's Place.

Lots of Variety

There are 5 colleges, with each college having at least one dining hall, as well as some sort of store. Needless to say, this makes it pretty easy to get some variety. People learn which dining halls they like for which meals and tend to follow a pattern; for example, the sandwich bar at lunch at Pitzer is amazing, while the Mudd dining hall's best meal is breakfast.

The food at the dining hall is generally pretty good but rather repetitive. To break the monotony, most people occasionally go to one of the other five dining halls on the 5Cs, which have varied strengths. Jay's Place is definitely a favorite spot for evening study breaks and snacks.

Did You Know?

Every year, all the students from the 5C eat together outside at one of the campuses, and all the different dining halls make their own different food in a sort of buffet-bar dinner.

The meal plan includes meals at every dining hall in the Claremont Consortium. It is set for 8, 12, or 16 meals, and an equal number of “Flex Dollars,” which is money on the plan that may be spent like a pre-paid credit card but only for food.

There are language tables that gather occasionally at lunch, where people get together at a table and spend all of lunch speaking in a foreign language.

If you live in West, East, or Case Halls, there is a dorm table in the front of the Hoch-Shanahan Dining Commons where you can go and make friends with people from your dorm. Why only West and East? Nobody knows.

The Coop down at Pomona is an excellent place to go shopping for Pop Tarts, macaroni and cheese, and other snack foods to tide you over through the week.
