College Prowler Take
The Village is the closest place to dine off campus—unfortunately, it is also the most expensive. Going to eat in Claremont usually involves parents, students who have recently hit the lottery, or students who already have decent paying jobs. There are some places that aren’t extremely expensive, but the cheapest option is a two-minute drive to the nearest Del Taco. If you’re seeing someone, the restaurants in the Village are a good choice for a sit-down date, if you have already grown tired of the outdoor picnic tables at In-N-Out. Although Claremont tends to be expensive, there are plenty of cheaper and more desirable options if you have a car. Fast food is a few minutes away, and if you feel like it, you can always drive to Los Angeles, where dining options abound. The best off-campus dining for most students, however, occurs during parents’ weekend. And the absence of fast food, a college staple, makes it awfully hard on the wallet to eat off campus regularly for most students. If you can get around the cost, Claremont does offer students a fairly healthy selection, in terms of the types of food. From Mexican to Chinese to Italian to wings, there are always options available within a 10-minute drive. For more unusual items, however, you will almost definitely have to make a longer, more exhausting trip.

The food at the dining hall is generally pretty good but rather repetitive. To break the monotony, most people occasionally go to one of the other five dining halls on the 5Cs, which have varied strengths. Jay's Place is definitely a favorite spot for evening study breaks and snacks.

Mudd's dining hall is probably the best out of all of the other Claremont colleges, which is definitely a plus. Other campus' dining halls aren't bad either, so it's good to get around and have a little variety when Mudd food gets repetitive.

All of the dining halls on the 5Cs have very good food, although popular opinion has it the quality is degenerating. Each dining hall offers different food.

The food varies from good to okay to innovative to sometimes plain bad. But there are six dining options (six different dining halls), so that helps. |

Pitzer has good sandwiches, and CMC has good hamburgers for dinner. Down at Pomona, the breakfasts are varied. I think Mudd’s breakfasts are the best, though. |

Did You Know?Every year, all the students from the 5C eat together outside at one of the campuses, and all the different dining halls make their own different food in a sort of buffet-bar dinner. The meal plan includes meals at every dining hall in the Claremont Consortium. It is set for 8, 12, or 16 meals, and an equal number of “Flex Dollars,” which is money on the plan that may be spent like a pre-paid credit card but only for food. There are language tables that gather occasionally at lunch, where people get together at a table and spend all of lunch speaking in a foreign language. If you live in West, East, or Case Halls, there is a dorm table in the front of the Hoch-Shanahan Dining Commons where you can go and make friends with people from your dorm. Why only West and East? Nobody knows. The Coop down at Pomona is an excellent place to go shopping for Pop Tarts, macaroni and cheese, and other snack foods to tide you over through the week.
