College Prowler Take

Campus Security is generally quite lax about drugs and drinking. In accordance with the Honor Code, the main rule is to stay out of trouble while you’re under the influence. If a student breaks something or gets hurt while they’ve been drinking, they are put on alcohol probation. Students that continue to do stupid things while drunk are subject to severe punishment, including possible expulsion. People who smoke do so openly, outside in the dorm lounges. For the most part, they only get harassed if they set off the smoke alarm and upset the whole dorm. Students look out for each other and dole out punishment as needed, and it usually isn’t necessary to involve Campus Security. Mudd funds all of the parties including alcohol, so all of the alcoholic parties are free to students, whether or not you are underage. The loose alcohol policy also discourages frontloading—drinking heavily before a party so that you can stay drunk all night.

The Mudd Honor Code is the only thing you absolutely must live by as a student. Each member of the Associated Students of HMC is responsible for maintaining his or her integrity and the integrity of the college community, in all academic matters and in all affairs concerning the community. At Harvey Mudd, students take the Honor Code very seriously, and as a result, we are usually left to our own devices. It’s one of the best parts of Mudd.

Mudd does not pay for alcohol at parties. It does, however, pay for parties, all of which are free for all students. Mudd goes by the "work hard, play hard" philosophy, and part of that is encouraging students to let off some steam on the weekends. If the students throwing a party want to have alcohol, that is up to them. And yes, the alcohol is free to all students.

We like to burn things a lot, but Campus Security is pretty good about not reporting any of it. We just like to have our fun, and when we’re done, we put out the fire and douse the embers and everybody is happy. No problems.

Mudders do a lot of things that aren’t exactly legal, but the school turns a blind eye to most of it. If you do something wrong, though, you have to turn yourself in. Those are the rules you agree to when you come to Mudd.

The Honor Code is awesome here. Students do whatever they like, and as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone, Campus Security stays away. The annual Christmas tree burning at West is a good example where Campus Security officers know to stay away because we’re burning things, and they come around after they know we’re through, to make sure nothing went wrong.

If you do something stupid and harmful, you have to self-report, or other students will report you. Mudd really leans on the Honor Code for that kind of stuff. We govern ourselves, and there really isn’t much that you get caught for.
