Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Mudd is definitely not a happening place for guy-girl interaction. Most Mudders were nerds in high school, and not surprisingly, are nerds in college. It’s not unusual for students to arrive at HMC having never had a boyfriend or girlfriend. Despite their lack of social skills, though, Mudders usually don’t have too much trouble finding a special someone, whether on campus or off. There aren’t a lot of random hookups—Mudders tend to go for committed relationships. Sexual promiscuity is rare on campus, since gossip runs wild at such a small school.

There are exceptions, however, but for the most part, Mudders aren’t all that good-looking or promiscuous. Although Mudd doesn’t have a high proportion of good-looking students, Scripps and CMC are popular places to go if you’re prowling for a short-and-sweet type of connection. In general, Mudd is really a good place to find someone for the long run. Relationships usually stem more from common interests and respect than simple physical attraction. Relationships are usually somewhat adult, and based more on conversation and intellect than muscles and curves. It’s drastically different from the overly image-conscious “real world” that most people deal with in high school. It is a small campus, though, so there are a limited number of fish in the pond. It’s also worth noting that guys outnumber girls two to one on Mudd’s campus.

Variety

There are a lot of different people on campus but nobody is really extraordinary looking. There are the occasional few but overall it's a smart school and you can tell.

Smart and Quirky

Mudd is a close-knit community where the boys and girls are very smart and academically focused, yet each one is unique in some way. Some wear hats resembling a pumpkin pie that they knitted themselves, while others sport neon colored hair, and yet others skip backwards to dinner. Of course, there are the more normal looking students as well, but being such a diverse community allows the individual eccentricities to be more readily accepted than some other places.

These Girls Are Not a C

As a guy at Mudd, I have to say that the girls in Suite Booty in Linde Dorm are pretty hot. They are a legacy suite that throws parties such as Lingerie, Anything But Clothes, and Red Light District. Those girls alone can change the grade for girls at Harvey Mudd from a C to an A!

Facts

Social Scene

The students here usually come off as shy (four years of being a nerd in high school will do that to you). As time goes on, and drinks get passed around, we open up. There is a lot of in-dorm interaction. And when people aren't working, chances are, they're partying. Mudders know how to find a balance.

Hookups or Relationships?

Most people at HMC seem to get involved in serious relationships. There are random hookups, but it's more likely to happen with members of the other colleges. With such a small school, the gossip mills run rampant, and people that hook up for one night wake up with the entire school knowing about it. Sometimes, having such a close-knit community can be a drawback.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Dorm meetings and IM sports are often a good way of getting to meet people. Private parties, which offer more intimacy than your typical, huge 5C bash, are a nice way to expand your social circle. Taking advantage of the huge workload, Mudders use study groups as springboards for meeting new friends. As an added bonus to getting help from other people, the upper classman tutors are usually hotties. If you’re a guy, go hang out at Motley Coffee house, or take classes off campus. Taking ballroom dance classes gives you the opportunity to dance with other people without even having to initiate (they have to dance with you), although it is hard to remember everyone’s name after dancing with twenty different people in an hour.

Dress Code

Students at Mudd don't tend to worry too much about the way they look. A good third of the students go to early classes in their pajamas, and as long as the shirt stays on your back, it's good to go. Some students get too sloppy and start to smell, but there are others who pride themselves on being stylish nerds. Geekiness runs rampant, with MegaTokyo sweatshirts and Invader Zim underwear abounding (if you don't know what those are, you're probably better off). School spirit is high, but don't look for school colors—Mudders generally tend to make their own school spirit shirts with such popular slogans as "Doing my part in helping to combat grade inflation." Mudders love to dress up for parties, though, and so when we do dress up, we tend to go all out. If you come to HMC, be prepared for geek chic.
