Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Claremont is a quiet town filled with academic-minded people. A quarter of the adult population of Claremont holds a bachelor’s degree, while more than a quarter have graduate or professional degrees. While not considered a typical college town, you can see the influence that the 5C has on the surrounding environment. The Claremont community is generally very friendly toward students, but there aren’t any nightclubs in the immediate vicinity. The city is expanding, however, and continues to offer more youthful entertainment. For example, the Claremont Village expanded to include more restaurants and a movie theater. Claremont is very small-town America—the door-to-door mailman, the farmer’s market, and no fast food places to be seen. The surrounding neighborhoods are not quite as charming—Upland reeks of strip clubs and fast food, and Pomona has a fairly high crime rate. Generally, students rarely venture away from the “Mudd bubble.” Although Claremont’s small-town charm might be appealing to many, it does get a bit monotonous after awhile.

A lot of students get up-in-arms when the Claremont Police Department shuts down a party. Aside from the noise issues that continue to be fought about over Foothill Boulevard, college students rarely have problems with the Claremont community. Also, it is also nice to be close enough to Los Angeles to experience a big city without actually living in one.

Not much to do in Claremont

Even though freshmen aren't allowed to bring cars, there were some who got away with it. I'd recommend bringing one if you can or befriend with people who have cars. You need a car to go to Von's and Trader Joe's. Yes, it's very doable to walk there but you're a Mudder so you never have time besides feeding yourself, doing homework and going to classes. Besides, having a car would let you bring more groceries back.

The village is just down the street from Mudd and it's kind of nice to go there. Claremont is a nice quiet college town so it's a big contrast from LA. However, this means that if you get claustrophobic from Mudd and want to get off campus, you'll find that there isn't much to do.... besides going to the village or Starbucks/Fruizen across the street.

A Quiet Suburb With LA Access

Claremont is a really cute town, and much nicer than the surrounding area. The downtown area is small but sufficient and there are lots of shops and eateries that cater to the college crowd. It can be a little expensive, but there are deals if you look around. The school really supports students in getting off campus (into LA and elsewhere) with an organization called CAP, which subsidizes everything from food to concerts to themepark tickets.

Claremont is a safe-feeling place,...

Claremont is a safe-feeling place, and LA is only an hour Metro ride away. Claremont can start feeling small, and things tend to close early in the evenings. The other four Claremont schools have connected campuses to Mudd, and each has a distinct feel.

Did You Know?

Despite numerous expansion projects, the herbarium at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens is actually running out of space. The herbarium grows by a whopping 10,000 specimens per year. Now over 75 years old, the herbarium offers students at Mudd a quiet place to study.

When HMC first opened in 1957, it only had 48 students and seven faculty members. Harvey Seeley Mudd, the mining engineer from whom the school and several of its building take their names, died two years before the school opened, but the influence he left upon the school is undeniable. Mudd served as chairman of the Board of Fellows of what is now the Claremont Graduate University, and helped lay the groundwork for HMC.

5 Fun Facts about Claremont:

• The Folk Music Center has open-mic nights on the fourth Sunday of each month. For only a dollar per person, you can catch some of the area’s top acts. The Center also brings in national acts as part of its ongoing concert series.
• Every year, Claremont has an event called Village Venture. According to Claremont, it is the Autumn's largest arts and crafts fair in the Inland Valley.
Fast food is not allowed! You have to drive to Upland (about two minutes away) to find Del Taco, the nearest fast food joint.
