Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students plan on living on campus all four years of college, because they claim it to be one of the best experiences you can have—living right next to tutors and friends. Mudd students who live off campus do experience certain gains; some of them find apartments with bigger kitchens, pools, and all the amenities of the real world. However, many Mudders who move off campus say they feel cut off from the Mudd social life. Dorms have impromptu parties all the time, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find that in an apartment complex.

Another factor in looking at off-campus housing is transportation. You may have to make sure that your apartment or house has a garage, depending on where you live. HMC Housing Resources is available to help students with off-campus housing issues. For students who are worried about costs, it is sometimes less expensive to live off campus, but the benefits of living on campus far outweigh the expense. Some people would rather live without the noise and activity on campus, and it isn’t too hard to find people to share rent with. However, most Mudders want to live in one of the dorms, surrounded by friends and study groups, and all the madness of on-campus living, even if it means getting by without a hot tub.

Pretty much no one rooms off-campus freshman year. The dorms are close and convenient, and there's barely anywhere to live off campus. You won't want to.
