Best Things

  • The Honor Code. It's great to have so many students committed to a policy of honesty. Harvey Mudd has a more than well-developed sense of community, even when compared to other small schools.
  • Mudders. The students make the college, and the students at Mudd are great.
  • The professors. They're always here and always helpful. They go out of their way to be available and make a genuine effort to know their students.
  • Mudd has a lot of history. It may be young, but tradition abounds.

Worst Things

  • Sleep deprivation--fun and easy! Mudd students don't breeze through classes, and that kind of workload leaves little room for sleep. Say goodbye to your pillow when you get here.
  • Workload. If the lack of sleep doesn't get you, the work really might. Try to stay afloat as best you can.
  • Nerdiness. Sometimes it gets a little overwhelming, especially if it wasn't your thing to begin with.
  • The "Mudd Bubble." The obvious drawback to creating such a tight-knit community is that sometimes you forget there's a world out there.

Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Everyone agrees that attending school at Mudd is both a gift and a curse. The workload is immense, the tests are sometimes impossible, and a two question homework assignment can take all night. The reason most of us came to Mudd has a lot to do with the academic integrity of the College (we have one of the lowest grade inflation rates out of any college in the U.S.) and a lot more to do with the community. The professors here are amazing and the deans know students by name. The students are generally respectful of and helpful to each other.

One of the main reasons that Mudd is such a strong community is the Honor Code. The Honor Code is a way of life for students and is created and governed by students. Students here take it to heart. It means closed-book, closed-notes, take-home finals; being able to leave your possessions unguarded when you take a coffee break; 24-hour access to any academic building; having your wallet returned to you if you lose it in lab; and not having to lock your door, even if you go home for the weekend. Mudd has a trusting community. People look out for each other.
Along with academic strength and a good technical based education, the community makes Mudd one of the best schools around. HMC does a great job at weaving a unique social experience with an academic curriculum matched by few other schools.

People here work hard, party hard,...

People here work hard, party hard, do laundry hard—I’ve never been around so many passionate people. Students do crazy spontaneous things, like prank friends for no reason, but that, well, the spaghetti is sitting right there, and I might as well use it. Mudders are great—absolutely insane, but great.

Ask me Sunday night and I’ll tell you that Mudd is horrible. Ask me on a Friday and I’ll tell you that Mudd is heaven on earth. I guess the right answer is more like a Wednesday—Mudd is hard as anything, but loads of fun.

I ended up here partially by accident, and I’m really happy I did. I’ve had a far better experience here than I think I could have gotten at any other school. The professors are amazingly dedicated, and the environment is great.
