Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Breaking the rules at HC basically comes down to what rules you choose to break, who catches you, and who you have to answer to because of it. Students in honors houses have a lot of freedom. Students in the apartments are at the mercy of their neighbors, apartment assistants, and Public Safety, and the only real issue is usually with parties and noise. More times than not, the apartment assistant or Public Safety officer will tell residents to keep it down and see if there are more than 12 people inside—and it doesn’t take long to go over that. Some nights, parties will continually get asked to lower the noise, and some nights everyone will be told to leave. It’s a rare occasion when Public Safety hands out tickets because of parties and noise in the apartments.

Students in the dorms will get a good feel of what their fellow dorm residents, RA, and RD will tolerate. Many students would like to do away with the limitations on having guests of other genders in their room overnight. Many students also don’t agree with the College informing their parents if they get caught drinking underage, but Public Safety doesn’t issue many tickets for drinking anyway. In theory, Hastings College has black-and-white rules for its students. In practice, not many punishments get handed out because students are pretty well behaved, and Public Safety and RAs are pretty lenient.

Very strict about drugs and underage drinking

The campus police are very strict about drugs, which is very important. Drinking is allowed on the college apartments as long as the person is over 21. Underage drinking is not tolerated in anyway.

Not especially strict regarding noise and drinking

Public Safety is not especially strict regarding noise and drinking. I think some people wish they were more strict, especially with the noise in some of the campus apartments. Local police do not show very much lenience though, so that makes up for it to some extent.
