Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students don’t get the chance to welcome and show their acceptance of diversity because it simply does not exist at Hastings College. Diversity at HC consists of boys and girls, various breeds of Christians, and students representing all the many areas of the middle class. The political scene is also pretty bland concerning all levels of politics. There doesn’t seem to be an overwhelming concern or action regarding what goes on in the “real world.” And while Student Government members are pretty serious about their positions, the majority of the student body is oblivious to their actions, even though these select students are spending thousands of their dollars.

Hastings' deficient mix of differences is definitely not for a lack of trying. The student groups that welcome many varieties of diversity are evidence that most of the students and faculty are open to differences. There is support for the little diversity that does exist on campus and hope that there will be more diversity to come.

Diversity

Everyone is treated equally at Hastings College, color isn't looked at unless it's on a palette in the art center, the financial aid department is phenomenal about finding ways to ensure that anyone that wants to really be there will attend school there, at all costs, sexual orientation isn't looked at as any issue, nor is anyone's political beliefs or religious choice.

I love the diversity on campus!

I love the diversity on campus! I came from a small country school, and this is really a great place to go if you want to fit in and have things in common with people but still have the chance to debate with your roommate about who should become president. Everyone is pretty accepting of different opinions and others’ differences; every student’s opinions and choices are accepted.

Way less diverse than I'm used to

The campus is way less diverse than I’m used to because my family was military and always lived in military towns. I’m used to schools and other things being very diverse, so being at Hastings is a little weird for me.

Facts

Gay Pride

Alliance is a group that works to promote acceptance and provide education, safety, and support for all genders and sexual orientations. There are many students who are open and accepting of all genders and sexual orientations. There are also some students who are openly (but not violently) opposed to what and who Alliance stands for.

Political Activity

Hastings College Republicans and Hastings College Democrats are open for any student to join. Students run for Student Government positions, and most of them take their jobs very seriously.

Economic Status

Most students seem to come from about the same amount of money—somewhere in the middle class. There are some who are less fortunate but not so bad that they can’t afford the tuition at Hastings. There are also a few that spend mom and dad’s money like it’s going out of style. However, one group doesn't really seem to stick out from the crowd.

Most Common Religions

The majority of students are Christian, including Catholics, Presbyterians, Methodists, and Lutherans. There is a sprinkling of Jews and other religions, as well as some atheists and agnostics. There is a wide variety of religious organizations to join on campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

The Multicultural Student Union (MSU) is a prominent group on campus that supports, celebrates, and educates students on people of all cultures. Anyone is welcome to join, and they offer a variety of cultural events to the entire campus.
