Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Greek system at Hastings College is pretty unique. There are strong personalities in each of the groups. Alpha Phi Sigma sorority has been around since 1916 and does a lot of social activities and community service. Alpha Delta Alpha sorority is similar, but has only existed since 1993. Chi Omega Psi sorority, founded in 1924, does a lot of social activities and community service, as well, but the majority of their members are or have been athletes at Hastings College. Alpha Omega is a Christian-based sorority that was started in 1996. In terms of fraternities, Eta Phi Lambda, founded in 1910, is the oldest fraternity on campus. However, membership is dwindling so much that it may not exist to celebrate its 100-year anniversary. Beta Chi, founded in 1987, is a Christian fraternity that usually has many members. Psi Theta Epsilon was founded by a group of male students in 2006 and has been working to build membership and tradition. Tau Beta Alpha originally existed from 1988 until 1999 and was resurrected in 2007 by a group of male students seeking to promote leadership and diversity on campus.

Since the Greek system at Hastings is not national, the groups pretty much live in their own little, happy world. The Greeks also have a strong pull with the social scene because they plan many of the organized parties that go on throughout the year. Some students wish Hastings had a national Greek system with houses and connections to other schools, but there is still a strong connection between the Greeks on campus and alumni because so many students participate in sororities and fraternities. Some sororities and fraternities have come and gone, but the Greek system has endured for a long time at Hastings College.

Greek Isn't a Big Deal

Greek life at hastings college isn't a big deal to be honest. It isn't to hard to get to become a greek, just about anyone can. Being in greek doesn't take over your life because most people that go to Hastings college are either in sports or music and those are the first priority, and they don't really have huge parties either.

A big part in the social scene

Greek life is very active with lots of fraternities and sororities. The fraternities have lots of activities which keep them going. The sororities organize many events on campus. The sororities and fraternities are a big part in the social scene because they put together most of the organized social events.

None are nationally affiliated

We have local fraternities and sororities, but none that are nationally affiliated. We do not have houses for any of them either. My friends and I enjoy the Greek life at Hastings even though it’s only local. The bonus to that is that dues aren’t expensive!

  • None of Hastings College's social fraternities or sororities is national, so there is no official Greek housing. This also keeps dues very low, anywhere between $25 and $40 per semester. However, there is a men's music fraternity, as well as a women's music fraternity. These are national, but also do not have official campus housing.
  • A few of the Greek organizations at HC have been around for close to 100 years. Each has their own specific traditions, but all of the Greeks hold Rush Week during Homecoming in the fall semester. This includes many competitions that help each individual group get to know their new members while interacting with the other sororities and fraternities. All the Greeks are governed by the Inter-Greek Council (IGC), which also hosts the Greek Dinner Dance (GDD) in the spring for all Greeks and their guests.
