Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is at least one Public Safety officer on duty at all times, and he or she is in charge of opening and locking up all campus buildings, as well as doing rounds through the dorms and campus at night. The officer also helps the apartment assistants control noise and parties in the on-campus apartments. It is usually not difficult to get ahold of Public Safety. However, at night when the officers are locking up buildings, it can take awhile for them to respond to a call. Luckily, these calls usually aren’t concerning emergencies.

Most students find the HC campus and Hastings community pretty safe, and if they didn't, they could call Public Safety or find a buddy to escort them somewhere. This sense of safety comes from knowing that there has been little to no crime on or around campus. However, there are a number of areas on campus that are badly lit and can be uncomfortable to walk through at night. The College’s surveillance system is also very poor. Many cameras only scan areas, so they can miss incidents. There are also parking areas that cameras don’t reach at all. In past years, a few students have had cars broken into or been hit by hit-and-run drivers that were not caught on tape. And anything that is caught on tape is not kept long and is usually gone by the time the tape is requested. The tapes are also of poor quality and are not of much use, anyway. Overall, Hastings College does a pretty good job of providing safety measures on campus, and Hastings itself is also a safe place. Students do a good job of looking out for one another. Any incidents are usually between students, and at a school where everybody pretty much knows everybody else, there isn’t much that goes unnoticed.

Super Safe

I've always felt safe at Hastings. It's a small and friendly campus, and even on bad nights it's a very safe place to be. I can walk around with friends and leave my door unlocked and not fear for myself or my things.

Perfectly Safe

I feel completely safe on campus. I have never heard of a problem. There are also emergency poles all around campus that contact help if there were to be a problem.

Health and Safety

Crime is virtually non-existent, personal safety is of utmost importance and everyone looks out for each other. Campus security is always on alert, dorms are locked at all times and require a special key to gain entry. The local police and sheriff's office is located within a safe distance to the college and everyone always feels secure being there.
