Quick Stats

School Slang
  • HC: Hastings College
  • The Ho: The cafeteria is known as the "Ho," and take-out meals are called "Ho-to-go."
  • HSU: Hazelrigg Student Union
  • Hurley-Mac: Hurley-McDonald building
  • LAP: Liberal Arts Program/general classes
  • PFF: Physical Fitness Facility (pronounced "puff")
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Creating a personalized program was really annoying. It was hard, took a lot of paperwork, and then had to be changed all the time. HC prides itself on the personalized program, but it’s terrible to complete!
  • Don’t bring too much! Start with enough to be comfortable and then bring more later if you need it.
  • Hastings is a really close-knit community. It definitely feels like home. All of the students are really friendly. The teachers do whatever they can to help students feel comfortable and succeed.
  • There are so many things to get involved in!
Tips to Succeed
  • Because it's a liberal arts school, students should come to Hastings with an open mind—they will learn lots of new facts.
  • Get involved! There is a wide variety of groups for students to join, even as freshmen, and this is a key part in meeting other students. School isn’t all about the academics; it’s also about the interactions with classmates and just having some fun. If students stay busy, they won’t have a chance to become homesick.
  • Leave the door to your room open when you are at “home” in your dorm room or apartment. It’s the best way to make friends.

Unique Things

Hastings College has the only Marching band in our conference, has a history going back over 125 years, and has an excellent choir. This is not a huge college, but the smaller campus is nice, especially rushing from one end to the other for classes, and it has a small town sort of feel, while still being in a decent sized city. One unique opportunity at Hastings is the chance to be part of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a national music fraternity, we're one of only two colleges in Nebraska with an active chapter, and it's a great thing to be a part of. For the ladies theres Sigma Alpha Iota, a very similar thing to PMA, and also a great thing to be part of.

Traditions
  • Boar’s Head: Around Christmastime, students are invited to a semi-formal dinner served by the professors. A boar’s head is displayed at the head table, and the tradition is to be able to steal the boar’s head from the dinner.
  • May Fete: Every year in the spring, students have a week-long celebration where they bring in inflatables, movies, and hold a banquet and dance.
  • Mr. & Ms. Bronco: The Student Alumni Ambassadors host a campus-wide talent show where participants represent an organization they belong to. The winners hold the coveted titles of Mr. Bronco and Ms. Bronco. This is one of the most entertaining events of the year.
Urban Legends Students agree that the ghost of Clara Altman, former professor of English at HC, haunts the halls of the dorm named in her honor, Altman Hall. There are also stories of ghosts in McCormick Hall, Fuhr Music Hall, and the Scott Studio Theatre.
