Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s pointless to ask a Hastings College student what his or her plans are for an evening out on the town because everyone already knows what everyone is doing—heading to the apartments or to a popular off-campus house to drink the night away. Students old enough to go to the bars will find that drinks are pretty cheap. While there aren’t any clubs in Hastings and only two bars with dance floors, bars and parties crank all kinds of music, from rap to rock to country. Many nights end in a dance party, and many coffee tables in the apartments have been danced upon like a stage and subsequently broken.

There are also plenty of nonalcoholic options, like movies in the dorms, bowling, or trips to coffee shops; however, they're not very popular. Even if you don’t like to drink, you can still go along with those who do because there’s fun to be had by everyone. Card games are very common, and beer pong is a must, even though around here it gets played with water instead of actual beer. This leaves people to drink at their own pace or not at all if they so wish. Yes, nightlife in Hastings is predictable and, many would say, boring, but it’s really not so bad once you get into the small-town swing of things.

Beer pong

Beer pong is played A LOT. I think it’s a Nebraska thing, but we play with water instead of beer in each of the cups. That way the beer doesn’t get nasty, and you don’t necessarily have to drink to play.

Cheapest Place to Get a Drink

Drinks in Hastings are generally cheap to begin with, and most of the bars in town have happy hours or different daily specials. Many bars also have great specials on Saturdays in the fall during Husker football season. The most popular bar on a given night is usually the bar with the best drink special. Students learn about this through word of mouth.

Organization Parties

There are many organizations that host parties on campus. The PUN groups (Peer Education Umbrella Network) host Fun with Pun nights where there are various activities provided in the student union for all students. The sororities and fraternities all have parties throughout the year, some open to campus and others by invitation only. Many organizations will also host dances as fundraisers.
