Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The restaurant situation in Hastings is pretty sad. There is just about every fast food restaurant that ever existed, and the nicer restaurants mostly consist of steak houses and bars. On the bright side, these local restaurants can have great dinner specials on wings and burgers, and also on drinks for the 21-plus crowd. There are a few cafés that tend to cater to an older demographic and the farmer crowd, but they do tend to serve pretty awesome breakfasts.

The few non-chain restaurants (like Sghetti’s, Papa Ray’s Pizza, and Taylor’s Steak House) have gotten mixed reviews mainly because many students are spoiled with decently-run chain restaurants in their hometowns. In Hastings, the service often seems to be lacking at some of the local restaurants, which contributes to the occasional bad experience and mixed reviews. The exception to the local restaurant rule is bars like Murphy’s and the Reno. They are pretty consistent, and students usually know most of the staff. But not a lot of college students are running around with the cash to go have nice dinners very often. And if they do, they stick with fast food, settle for the sometimes unreliable local restaurants, or take a short trip to Grand Island.

Dining

Hastings has three Runza Resturants, lots of pizza places- including Back Alley Bakery which makes pizza from scratch on Thursdays, and the first Eileen's Cookies.

And if Hastings doesn't have what you want to eat, there's much more after the 20 minute drive to Grand Island.

Variety

All the dining options that are close to Hastings College are the same, they are all fast food. You don't get much variety unless you drive 20 miles to a bigger city with more options or you go to a family restaurant across town.

Hunan's Chinese restaurant

Hunan’s Chinese restaurant is amazing! It’s one of the things I miss most about Hastings when I go home for the summer.
