Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Reserving housing in Hastings depends on what you’re looking for. There are a variety of options around town including apartments and houses that house anywhere from seven to one. It’s pretty easy to get your hands on one if you contact the landlord enough time in advance. But reserving houses can be tricky. Some years, certain houses are in high demand, and groups of students have them reserved with landlords almost a year in advance. There are also houses that used to be popular that students no longer live in, either because the house is no longer desired or because landlords got tired of housing college students.

And just because you live off campus doesn’t necessarily mean you lose out on the social experience. Many areas have multiple college houses near one another, each with quite a few residents, and there are quite a few housing options very close to campus. Prices and quality can vary. There is expensive housing—some worth the money, and some not so much. There is also cheap housing—some of which is a steal and some where you get what little you pay for. While off-campus housing is only available to seniors or students with special circumstances, it can be worth the wait.

A little out of the loop

I know a few of my friends that lived at home in Hastings instead of on campus. They felt a little out of the loop because they would go home every night. They had to sit in the library between classes because they didn't have a room to go to.

I like living off-campus

I know some underclassmen that live at home don’t get the social experience that their classmates do living on campus. But I’m a senior and have already made a lot of connections. I have lots of roommates to socialize with, and I feel like our house gives us a place to invite more people over for parties without being monitored by Public Safety.
