Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There really isn’t anything in the way of public transportation for students. Safe Rides are a great option for any Hastings College student, regardless of age or intoxication level, who is looking for a ride home—students just have to show their student ID. The service is primarily used on the weekends to shuttle students home from parties or the bars. The drivers are only supposed to take students back to their place of residence, but the drivers can easily be bribed if students treat them to a late-night drive-thru run on the way to being dropped off at another party.

A Hastings College student’s main form of transportation around campus is a pair of tennis shoes or a bike. The same can be said with traveling to a grocery store, drugstore, bar, shop, and restaurant—all of which are within about 10 blocks from campus. However, most students bring cars and choose to drive to these establishments. As far as getting out of Hastings, most students just drive. Students without cars are few and far between; they either take the train or catch a ride with a friend. There always seems to be pleas from foreign exchange students to get rides to the airport in Lincoln or Omaha, and there is always a steady stream of students headed to Wal-Mart north of town, just waiting for some company.

The campus is not that large so it isn't an issue to get places except we have to meet at a community building for band rehearsal because the music building is not big enough for us anymore. I don't like having to drive all the time and don't feel like paying for gas. I ride my bike...that is when it's not snowing.

No public transportation in Hastings

There is no public transportation in Hastings, but most things are within biking distance except for Wal-Mart. It’s not a big deal because you can always hitch a ride with someone.

There really isn't public transportation

There really isn’t public transportation which is very inconvenient for students. The best thing to do is to ask for a ride from a friend or neighbor. It is very unfortunate that there is no public transportation. I would recommend bringing your own car.
