Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Weather in Hastings is anybody’s guess. It is not at all uncommon for weather to fluctuate 30 degrees one way or another from day to day. The only constant is the high humidity. It’s usually hot when school starts. Depending on the year, be prepared for winter weather to begin as early as October and ruin Halloween parties. Or sometimes it will hold out until January and last through May. There have been plenty of big snowstorms. Winters, whenever they may be, are nice and sloppy, with plenty of snow that likes to stick around quite awhile before melting.

The promise of spring is a tease, often leaving students sadly swapping sandals for snow boots. If temperatures are higher, students can expect a few good days of rain each week, alternating with pleasantly breezy or hot days. There is always the chance of hail or tornados in Hastings. Nebraska averages about 40 tornadoes a year, and a hail storm several years ago wiped out many trees and the majority of windows across campus. Even though the weather can be mighty extreme, Hastings gets its fair share of pleasant days. Again, just about anything goes.

Completely unpredictable weather

Nebraska weather is completely unpredictable. One day it can be sunny and 95 degrees and the next we will be up to our eyeballs in freezing, icy snow. As far as clothing for our awesome weather, dress like you are going to Antarctica and the beach! You will experience every kind of weather situation imaginable except for a Hurricane, even though sometime it feels like we are getting hit by a hurricane with Nebraska wind.

In a pocket of bad weather

Compared to eastern Nebraska, Hastings typically gets the winter weather first and gets hit harder. If Omaha gets two inches of snow, there’s a good chance we will get four. If Lincoln gets a thunderstorm, chances are we got hail. Hastings seems to be in this pocket attracted to bad weather. But we do get the nice weather as well, so be prepared for anything!
