Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Haverford is a Division III school, and although athletes take their own sports seriously, athletics aren’t a very big part of the overall Haverford experience. They don’t play a large role in Haverford life. Some of our teams are exceptional, most notably the men’s and women’s cross-country squads and the women’s volleyball team. On the other hand, there are teams that are not-so-good, and students hope that new coaches who have recently been hired can fix this. Few students attend games, with the exception of anything played against arch-rival Swarthmore, especially when the game is basketball. The most well-attended games are always our men’s basketball team against theirs. The baseball, field hockey, lacrosse, and soccer teams get decent attendance at their games, too. We haven’t had a football team since 1972 and brag about it through the perennially hilarious “Haverford Football: Undefeated Since 1972” T-shirt.

One nice thing about Haverford athletics is that participation is very high. Approximately 40 percent of students play on a varsity team, and another large number of students are involved in a club sport. We might not be terribly good, but we do like to play, and the College requires us to. The Haverford academic year is divided into four quarters, and by the second year, all students must complete six quarters of physical education credits as a graduation requirement. In fact, the College is so serious about this that students cannot register for their fifth semester of school (usually fall of the junior year) if this requirement isn’t met. A majority of Haverford students are athletes in their own way, and if you can’t find one on the court, track, or field, you can find one nearby supporting their Black Squirrels.

Very Accessable

A large portion of Haverpeople are involved in sports, and that is what it is about here, being involved and being active. It is a very active and athletic campus, although we are only D3. Students get involved in sports to have some good exercise, meet new people, stay in shape, and have fun. Our teams are not the best, but very accessible to become a part of. On club teams (and even a few varsity teams) there will be a range of people, those who have never even played the sport before, to those who were their high school's MVP's. There's a ton of school spirit and the GIAC (gym) is in the center of campus and is pretty new. Athletics are a big part of the social life at Haverford, and can be anything from barely any commitment to 90% of your life here. It's a great scene to become involved with.

Haverford has the standard varsity sports, and though we're proud of them, we don't usually go to championships or play at an extremely competitive level. The new gym, fondly called the GIAC (Gardner Integrated Athletic Center), is big, shiny, and green (ecologically speaking). It has a great weight room with lots of free weights, weight machines, and cardio machines. It also has several large gymnasiums and squash courts, as well as a fencing salle and multipurpose rooms. Club sports are also pretty popular, like Rugby, Cricket, and Ultimate Frisbee.

Most Popular Sports

Both Men’s and Women’s track and cross-country win frequently and are therefore rather popular. Women’s volleyball has experienced recent success and notoriety. Many students attend men’s and women’s soccer and basketball games, men’s lacrosse games, field hockey games, and baseball games. Games versus Swarthmore are traditionally well-attended. Most sports will draw a large crowd if they are playing an important game.

Most Overlooked Teams

Our cricket team, the nation’s only varsity-level squad, gets very little attention.

School Spirit

The paradox is that although Haverford students have minimal school spirit in the traditional “rah-rah” sense, most are very proud of the College. So we have school spirit, but it is a more mature, refined brand. Attendance at sporting events has picked up a little over the past couple years, though.

Getting Tickets

There’s no need to get tickets to attend a Haverford sporting event.
