Haverford College - Campus StrictnessCollege Prowler4.62
College Prowler Take
The generally laid-back attitude on campus is one of Haverford’s strongest suits and is demonstrative of the trusting relationship we enjoy with our administration (most of the time). Haverford’s security staff is very lenient. They will only break up a party if there is violence or a neighborhood complaint, and they warn students if the police are coming so that they can disperse before police arrive. This is the product of a wonderful tacit agreement with the Lower Merion and Haverford Township police departments. Security does not concern itself in the slightest with underage drinking. The school has an Alcohol Policy (which is debated and approved by the student body every year) clarifying that Pennsylvania law disallows anyone under the age of 21 from consuming alcohol, but nobody is ever cited for drinking while on campus. This common sense policy keeps alcohol consumption on campus, where security knows what’s going on and can intervene if there is a problem. Whenever there is an incident of binge drinking or alcohol poisoning (relatively rare occurrences), the students involved face no penalties for reporting the incident to security and getting the necessary help. Every once in a while, a party gets out of hand and a neighbor complains. Sometimes the police show up. When this happens, the deans send the student body a reminder about how the College’s lassiez faire alcohol policy is a privilege. Usually, after that, things quiet down. The general rules here are self-control and self-respect, which have the end-goal of a safe and wise community.

Needless to say, everything is...
Needless to say, everything is based on the Honor Code. You don’t have be over 21 to drink, so age is not an issue. It is actually healthy because since we can openly drink, people don’t feel that much of an urge to do it. It is not forbidden, but the Honor Code regulates how alcohol should be consumed. Drinking in a public space counts as an Honor Code violation. |

Campus police are quite lax about...
Campus police are quite lax about drinking and drugs, as the students are trusted to make wise and rational decisions on their own. The campus police will only step in during extreme circumstances. |

We have a very trusting...
We have a very trusting administration that believes we are adults who can drink if we choose to. They abide by the PA state law of being 21 to drink, but they also want to make sure that if we do choose to drink, it will be in as safe an environment as possible. |

We’re not strict at all. Security...
We’re not strict at all. Security is concerned almost exclusively with safety and allows for non-excessive drinking, as long as the merry-makers are not destructive or bothersome. |

Security is very, very laid-back. |
